**Job summary**:
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions and child maintenance policy. As the UK’s biggest public service department, it administers a range of working age, pension age, disability and ill health benefits to around 18 million claimants and customers.

The Child Maintenance Service (CMS) is responsible for all aspects of child maintenance in Great Britain. Our role is to promote financial responsibility, and to encourage and support private maintenance arrangements, as well as provide a statutory maintenance service.

**Job description**:
You will primarily present in court hearings for contested Liability Orders and Sanctions as well as appeals tribunals. When necessary you will negotiate debt with parents in court, ensuring the best outcome for each case.

It is important to build and maintain relationships with court and tribunal officials in addition to your colleagues and Case Managers across all regions. This could be by phone, video link or in person.

As a member of the Court Presenting Team, you will work closely with operational colleagues and external partners such as Solicitors and Enforcement Agents. You will be trained in preparing, presenting, and completing day to day activities, initially being supported by experienced POs at hearings. At times you will maximise the use of digital technology to facilitate ‘on line’ attendance at hearings as appropriate.

Travel is an essential part of this role as the post holder will be required to attend various courts and tribunals, with overnight stays as required. A full driving licence would be beneficial.
- Fully prepare for each case by reviewing information, preparing necessary court documents, and liaising with CMS Case Workers and Legal Support Team (LST)
- Book, serve and present cases to Magistrates, County Courts and appeal tribunals, providing information as required in a professional manner and in line with relevant legislation and procedures
- Provide a face-to-face facility for clients to ensure parents are informed, can discuss issues, and, where appropriate, negotiate payments. Utilising an assertive approach when required and clarifying legislation to aid Magistrates/Judges
- Following a hearing, complete clear and concise Outcome Reports
- Manage relationships with key stakeholders and attend key meetings
- Work as part of a team ensuring sufficient cover for all cases

**Person specification**:

- Strong communication skills, including a proven ability to present information to different audiences using appropriate delivery styles and managing challenging conversations (lead Criteria)
- The ability to work on your own initiative to organise case load activities, re-prioritising within short timescales when required, whilst delivering outcomes timeously and accurately
- The ability to support the wider team, displaying flexibility in order to reach a resolution within deadlines
- The ability to influence and motivate others to build trust with stakeholders to achieve goals
- The ability to build, manage and maintain key trusting relationships and credibility with a range of colleagues and stakeholders through effective communication to achieve goals
- An understanding of Child Maintenance procedures and experience of working in an Enforcement environment or similar

**Behaviours**:
We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

- Making Effective Decisions
- Communicating and Influencing
- Working Together
- Managing a Quality Service

**Benefits**:
Working for DWP will include benefits such as learning and development tailored to your role, an environment with flexible working options, a culture encouraging inclusion and diversity and a Civil Service pension with an average employer contribution of 27% Civil Service pension.

In addition to a generous annual leave entitlement of 23 to 30 days dependent on length of service, you will also receive a number of public and privilege days (pro-rata for part-time employees).

We Value Everybody is one of our five Core Values here in CMS. We have active National Network Groups for Race, LGBGT+, Disability, Carers, Wellbeing, Faith & Belief and Age. Our monthly People Group meeting draws these groups together to listen, act, and update CMS Directors with our plans.
