Birmingham, United Kingdom University Hospitals Birmingham Full time

**Job summary**:
We have two vacancies for an Assistant Respiratory Physiologist to join our team on a permanent contract at the Lung Function & Sleep Department, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The unit is one of the most comprehensive in the UK offering a wide range of both routine and specialist respiratory investigations. The posts offer experience in a wide range of diagnostic investigations, providing support to qualified Clinical Respiratory Physiologists. You will be measuring basic lung function tests both diagnostically and screening pre-operatively within the department and on hospital wards, as well as assisting with more complex tests. Your role will also include general housekeeping duties.

To apply, you must have an interest in working with people and experience of working in a 'service type' setting. You must have a desire to continue with personal development and be enthusiastic and willing to learn. Excellent communication skills are essential in addition to being able to work as part of a team. Full 'in house' training to professional body standard will be provided.

**Main duties, tasks & skills required**:
The job will be centred around testing adult patients of all ages, mostly within the department but occasionally on hospital wards.

Main duties:

- Collect and record quality control data to ensure that equipment is functioning to agreed standards and specifications.
- Perform basic lung function tests to obtain good quality diagnostic information
- Accurately record observations and produce technical reports.
- Communicate complex instructions effectively to patients to ensure cooperation and compliance and to obtain accurate clinical data.
- Plan own workload throughout the working day
- Ensure all tests performed are according to relevant professional and departmental guidelines.

The range of tests include spirometry with bronchodilator reversibility, pulse oximetry (as spot checks and overnight sleep studies) and more complex sleep studies (e.g. polygraphy). Employees may be required to assist more experienced physiologists with specialist tests. Additional day-to-day duties include taking responsibility for the safe use of expensive equipment and undertaking maintenance and cleaning of laboratory.

Training and development are considered paramount for all staff and attendance at professional and scientific meetings is encouraged. You must have excellent communication skills, be able to use your own initiative and be able to work as part of a team across the Trust.
