**What is a Behaviour Support Specialist / Registered Behaviour Technician (RBT)?**

An RBT is a certified paraprofessional working in the field of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), supervised by a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA).

A Behaviour Support Specialist/ RBT’s main role is to implement evidence-based interventions designed by their BCBA supervisor.

**What the role entails**

This role will be a school-based position, working in an English medium special needs school with children aged 6-19.

Knowledge of key concepts of ABA and experience in ABA techniques such as; shaping, prompting, positive reinforcement, token economy, ABC data collection, naturalistic teaching, discrete trial teaching. Task analysis and chaining is desirable.

The day-to-day duties of the onsite Behaviour Support Specialist will be to collect behavioural data using indirect and direct measurement systems, implement behavioural interventions as directed by the BCBA. Provide onsite modelling and training to staff involved with the client. You will also receive supervision adhering to the BACB guidelines.

For those who are not certified as an RBT and or have a masters in ABA, full training will be provided for those not seeking BCBA supervision hours. It is essential you meet the following criteria set by the BACB:

- 18+years old
- 5 GCSE (A-C grade)
- Pass a DBS check
- Abide by the RBT code of ethics as set out by the BACB

You will then need to pass the 40-hour training, competency assessment and exam. Register with the BACB and the UKSBA. The time and cost associated with this will be part of your employment. You will be supervised by highly experienced and knowledgeable BCBA’s who will provide you with the support you require for the position.

There are 6 areas covered in the training set out by the BACB RBT Task List:
1. **Measurement**

Prepare, enter, and update all data related to students on caseload.

2. **Assessment**

Describe and record students’ behaviours in measurable terms. RBTs must also assist BCBAs with assessment procedures, which vary depending on each student’s behavioural needs.

3. **Skill Acquisition**

With your supervisors, create a skill acquisition plan for the student and implement procedures to encourage the student’s acquisition of the desired skill.

4. **Behaviour Reduction**

With your supervisors, create a behaviour reduction plan and implement interventions and differential reinforcement procedures.

5. **Documentation and Reporting**

Generate a complete report while complying with all applicable legal, regulatory, and workplace requirements. This report will involve other variables, such as illness and medication notes, and other objective observations.

6. **Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice**

Maintain clear lines of communication and professional boundaries, and implement supervisors’ feedback to improve your professional performance.
