**Job summary**:
The Maternity Support Worker (MSW) will undertake high quality, caring and compassionate personal care and associated duties under the direction and supervision of registered professionals working as part of a multi-disciplinary health and care team.

The post holder will Participate in the delivery of personal patient centred care, always maintaining a compassionate and professional attitude with people, their families, and carers. Support registered Midwives and Allied Health Care professionals (AHP's) in the provision of a caring and safe environment. Records clinical observations and changes to adults and infants' clinical condition and performs limited clinical care duties.

This post is suitable to people who have experience as health care support worker/ clinical support worker/ maternity care assistant. It is desirable that the post holder has one year's formal maternity care experience in a hospital/birth centre. The post holder is expected to undertake a set of defined competencies. Support will be given to employees to further develop their skills and explore pathways for progression where appropriate.

The post holder will be required to possess GCSE Maths Grades A-C, Levels 4-9, Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent, GCSE English Grades A-C, Levels 4-9, Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent, NVQ Level 3 in Health care or equivalent experience, and hold a Care certificate.

**Main duties, tasks & skills required**:
Manage own time and caseload effectively whilst prioritizing care needs for women and their babies under care under the direction and supervision of the midwife in antenatal, postnatal clinics, community hubs or home settings to ensure if appropriate the principles of continuity of carer are applied.

Undertake baseline/routine observations and measurements (and escalate any deviation from the normal range) to the named midwife or appropriate member of the multi-professional team.

Perform Venepuncture in line with national standards and local policy and guidance following completion of the appropriate competencies

Appreciate the importance and the role of human milk and breastfeeding to improve the health and wellbeing outcomes for infants, their mothers and the wider family and in promoting and protecting public health.

Understand the functional anatomy and physiology of lactation and hormonal influences on milk production and mothering. As well as the role of the Feedback Inhibitor of Lactation (FIL).

Understanding principles and mechanisms of attachment and positioning for effective feeding in line with BFI standards

Understand the importance of the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and subsequent WHA Resolutions (the Code)

Provide practical support and transition to parenthood for new parents when caring for their newborn, whilst promoting safety, bonding and teaching parenting skills in the home settings on practice
