Provide a vision test to all 4-5 year olds in Salford.
- To become competent and maintain competency in the testing of children’s vision using the Keeler LogMAR test.
- Liaise and consult with schools and community clinics to implement or plan vision screening requirements effectively.
- To ensure suitable parental consent is obtained, as a minimum legal requirement for vision screening.
- To make an autonomous clinical decision regarding outcomes of vision tests following agreed protocols.
- Complete a referral form for those children failing to meet the required standard (in line with departmental policy)
- Answer basic queries from parents of children tested in school.
- Must demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills to children in order to gain an accurate test and prepare them by giving an explanation of the procedure.
- Provide assistance and support to the Orthoptists as and when required.
- Provide administration support, duties include booking schools to visit, recording the outcome of the vision screening.

The role requires the need to be a team worker who likes a challenge, so good organisation skills and time management is essential. They will also need to be adaptable with good attendance to ensure a smooth running service. The position is specific to the Orthoptic Department with the role to screen vision in primary school settings and community clinics for 4-5 year olds in the Salford area. Departmental and Vision screening service administrative tasks are based in St James’ House, Salford. Good IT skills are advantageous. Access to transport is essential. Good communication and excellent people skills are essential especially with reception age children. All necessary training will be organised and undertaken within the department, following National Guidelines.

The post is based within the Childrens Hub at St James house, Salford. You will be working throughout Salford within the schools, as part of the multidisciplinary team.

Maintain the upkeep and monitor the condition of all equipment used within the Orthoptic screening programme and report any faults to management
