Bedford, United Kingdom Friends for Life Bedford Full time

**Outreach Worker**

**15 hours per week (for an initial contract period of two years)**

**Salary £15.00 per hour**

Friends for Life Bedfordshire (FFL) is a Bedford-based charity, (Registered Charity No -1165730), working to address the social isolation of residents in Bedfordshire’s care homes. Founded in 2007, we have grown from a small local initiative to a charity with c50 volunteers, supporting 32 care homes across Bedford Borough. We support over 350 residents who receive a combination of 1:1 personal befriending and wellbeing services delivered to groups.

We recognise the negative impact loneliness can have on a person’s wellbeing and we help to address this by recruiting volunteers to become personal befrienders, offering friendship and company to care home residents who have few or no external visitors.

The pandemic has highlighted the prevalence of loneliness and we are very proud to have been able to adapt our service to offer telephone befriending, video calls and letter writing. In addition, we have worked with other local organisations providing activities within the care homes. We want to build on these new and innovative ways to connect with our residents and within Bedford Borough.

The Trustees are looking to recruit to the new post of Outreach Worker. This is an exciting opportunity to build upon our existing Outreach activity, extending our reach to support more residents and increasing the local recognition of Friends for Life and the services we offer which will in turn help us reach more of those in need. Our experience is also that those engaged in the Outreach activity also benefit from the interaction.

**The role**

Reporting to the General Manager, the Outreach Worker will work in a small team comprised of: a Fundraising Officer; a Volunteer Lead and an Administrator. To date, the majority of our activity has been around supporting 1:1 engagement between volunteer “befrienders” and care home residents. Increasingly we have also worked to deliver group sessions which have been popular and successful. These are particularly impactful for those residents who find one to one interaction challenging and flourish through expressing themselves in other ways. The Outreach Worker will be employed to grow, develop and deliver this branch of
Friend for Life’s activity.

**Main Responsibilities**
- Build upon our existing partnerships with Tibbs Dementia Foundation and The Place Theatre - extending the number of Music 4 Memory workshops and Timeless Tales sessions across Bedford Borough
- Seek out new partners with whom to deliver other innovative and engaging activities to the Borough’s care homes
- Support existing, and create new, school/college - care home partnerships, delivering a programme of diverse activities encouraging intergenerational interaction, community support and inclusivity
- Delivering school assemblies to raise awareness of Friends for Life, the personal potential in volunteering and the experience of loneliness as lived by care home residents
- Build relationships with businesses in the Borough to raise the profile of Friends for Life and encourage philanthropic giving for specific outreach projects
- Attend networking events and connect with potential partners, financial supporters, deliverers of support services and others whose objectives align with our own
- The monitoring and evaluation of all outreach activity
- Ensure that Social Media and other methods of engagement with our residents, befriender volunteers, care homes, funders and other stakeholders are used effectively.

**SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION**:
**Communications**
The Outreach Worker will maintain high standards of communication across our network of partners. They will contribute to our culture of open, honest communication and feedback so that our team members benefit and learn from each other, maximising the effectiveness of our charity and minimising duplication.

**Equality and Diversity**

**Mobility / Flexibility**
The normal place of work for the post is the CVS building, Bromham Rd, Bedford, but as a term of employment post holders may be required to work from other establishments or from home. The place of work, the hours worked and when and where these hours are worked will be agreed with the General Manager.

**Health and Safety at Work**
In accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other relevant Health and Safety legislation and Codes, employees have a duty to take responsible care to avoid injury to themselves and others by their work activities and to co-operate in meeting statutory requirements.

**Data Protection and Confidentiality**
