**Purpose and background**

To help deliver Refugee Radio’s mental-health project to the highest professional standard, providing specialist support to refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable migrants, in particular those with PTSD and other mental health issues.

The role will include facilitating a weekly support group for refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable migrants with mental health issues in Hastings on Wednesdays and Brighton on Mondays. Refugee Radio have been running a support-group in Brighton since 2011 and Hastings is a new group which is being established to pilot our existing model in a new area. The focus of the group is on refugees and asylum seekers with undiagnosed PTSD. The group is being run in partnership with Brighton Therapy Centre, who will be providing trauma therapy to some of the participants.

In addition to the support-groups, the role also involves delivering outreach in the form of individual support, advice and signposting to those attending the groups in Brighton and Hastings. This can include advice on benefits, housing, health, education and employment. The outreach also includes promoting engagement to recruit participants from the refugee and migrant community to the group.

**Key Responsibilities**

**Delivery**
- Take responsibility for establishing the new group
- Liaise with our project partners at Brighton Therapy Centre who are providing trauma therapy to some of the participants

**Outreach and casework**
- Deliver casework and advice to refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable migrants
- Working in partnership with local community groups and charities, promote the project to refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants as beneficiaries
- Meet with participant and volunteers outside of the support-group on a one-to-one casework basis to provide outreach support, advice and advocacy
- Network with other agencies and organisations

**Support Group**
- Co-ordinate and facilitate the support group meetings every week
- Take responsibility for overseeing risk assessments and consultation with external psycho-therapeutic teams
- Handle the petty cash system for refreshments
- Ensure that health and safety regulations are complied with, as well as Refugee Radio’s own policies and procedures
- Attend meetings as required to ensure good relations and open communication with the group
- Supervise and manage the support-group assistant and any volunteers

**Monitoring and evaluation**
- Conduct monitoring and evaluation of the work on an ongoing basis
- Produce reports and case-studies as required

**Person Specification**

**Qualifications and training**:

- Essential_
- Relevant mental health qualification
- Training in working with vulnerable adults, especially around mental health/PTSD
- Desirable_
- Training in welfare benefits and housing matters
- Training and/or experience in human rights, immigration or asylum
- Training in human rights, immigration or asylum
- Membership of a professional body

**Experience and knowledge**:

- Essential_
- Working with refugees or BME groups
- Working with mental health issues
- Experience of running a support group
- Advice or casework experience and/or knowledge of rights and entitlements for refugees and asylum seekers
- Desirable_
- Experience of managing volunteers
- Experience in the voluntary sector
- Proven experience of participation in practice
- Experience of independent working
- Second language (especially Arabic, Farsi or French)

**Skills and abilities**:

- Essential_
- Proven ability to relate to individuals from a wide range of backgrounds with different needs
- Sensitivity to ways of working with and communicating with diverse cultural and ethnic groups, with people whose first language is not English
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
- Willingness to travel across Sussex
