- Job description- We’re looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Monitoring Officer to join the National Monitoring Field Team. This is a challenging and busy role working in the office and the field.
You’ll carry out a supervisory role where you will support your Line Manager and provide day to day technical advice and guidance to the field team to ensure the delivery of our monitoring programmes.
You will work closely with National and Area teams and will be responsible for planning and scheduling monitoring programmes to maximise efficiency. You will lead on maintaining, inputting and interpreting routine data on key systems.
The work is varied and you will also be required to collect environmental samples from rivers, boreholes, coastal waters and commercial businesses.
The job involves driving, lifting and carrying samples and equipment, working in and near water. You will be required to follow operational guidance and current Health and Safety procedures.
You will be responsible for your own health, safety and wellbeing, developing a positive HS&W culture for the Monitoring Field Teams.

- The team- We plan, schedule and collect field-based samples for both local, national and statutory requirements. The samples collected provide key data for multiple teams across the Environment Agency.
The Cumbria Team is dispersed with the main office in Penrith and a smaller depot at Bridgend (near Kendal), though wider travel around the area will be required. There is an expectation to support wider National Monitoring Field Teams.
- Experience/skills required-
A full UK driving licence is essential for this role.
Other key requirements for this job include:
- A motivated, organised, friendly and helpful person with an eye for detail, who is comfortable working in a dispersed team environment.
- Experience in training and mentoring others.
- Good level of literacy and numeracy skills.
- Able to deal with customers tactfully and effectively.
- Experience of using standard IT packages and specialised systems such as Salesforce, WIMS, Midas, RouteLIMS would be an advantage.
- Ability to undertake data entry and data interpretation.
- Leadership skills.
- Field and HS&W experience.

The base location for this role will be in Cumbria and you will be required to pick up equipment and drop off samples at your local depot. Your time will be split between working in the field across the team territory and at an office/home location.
