- Job description- The Environment Agency protects and improves the environment and makes it a better place for people, wildlife and supports sustainable development. We act as influential ambassadors for the natural environment; create new and enhance existing wildlife habitats to deliver multiple benefits and regulate development and other activities which have the potential to harm biodiversity.
As a Biodiversity Technical Officer, you will have excellent communication skills and experience of working with a wide range of people. You will be expected to deliver environmental outcomes and build strong relationships, both within the team and with internal and external stakeholders. You will be well-organised and have the confidence to work independently and on your own initiative.
- The team- The team has a vast amount of biodiversity expertise. We cover a rich, diverse environment with a mix of urban and rural catchments. We deliver technical advice and guidance to all aspects of the Environment Agency’s (EA) work including our own capital flood defence/flood risk management schemes, our river maintenance programme, responding to pollution incidents and influencing EA strategies and plans. We conserve and enhance rivers, still-waters, wetland, and estuaries to achieve long-lasting environmental improvements.
- Experience/skills required- Essential:
- Good understanding of biodiversity and ecological processes
- Proven ecological experience
- Ability to analyse and interpret ecological data and pressures on wetland species and habitats
- Knowledge of wetland and river conservation and legislation relating to wildlife and designated sites
- Self-motivated, acting independently with a pro-active approach
- Strong influencing skills with experience of engaging key stakeholders
- Confident communicator
- Excellent time management skills with an ability to manage an unpredictable workload and balance conflicting needs and priorities.
Advantageous:
- An understanding of policies relating to biodiversity
- Experience of effective partnership working
- Knowledge of Natural Capital and Ecosystem Services
- Knowledge of Town and Country Planning processes
- Understanding river processes and hydrology
- CIEEM membership or working towards.
A full UK driving licence and the ability to swim are essential.
