We wish to recruit a motivated, enthusiastic and dynamic individual to take on the challenging role of Matron within the Clinical Support Division. The post holder will join the senior leadership team and will work closely with the Lead Clinicians and Specialty General Managers for Critical Care.

Main duties of the job

The Critical Care Matron will be a key role in the continued development of our Critical Care services in transforming the experience of our patients. This role is heavily focused on supporting our clinical teams to give the safest quality care for patients within the Critical Care environment. This role will provide visible and dynamic leadership for our teams to deliver continued improvements.

Our 66 critical care beds are split between the Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital, admitting in excess of 4500 patients per year. We accept patients from all of the major medical and surgical specialties and are a tertiary referral centre for many subspecialties. Of note we are a neurosurgical centre, burns centre and are one of the busiest major trauma centres in Europe. Among our staff are the National Lead for Organ Donation and the Vice Chair of NIHR’s Critical Care Group.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Working with a vision of “delivering excellence in everything we do”, the Matron will work with the Critical Care Senior Leadership Team, Acute Directorate Leadership Team, Divisional Director, Divisional General Manager and Divisional Nurse to provide professional leadership management to the Nursing Service for the Division.

The Matron will be accountable for the efficient and effective operational management of the nursing workforce, guaranteeing provision of high quality evidence based nursing practice which will be delivered within a hospital, community and outreach setting. The Matron will be a strong clinical leader, easily identifiable, highly visible and accessible to patients, carers and staff. He/she will have a particular responsibility to support the developments of Clinical Governance and Service Improvement, to modernise patient services and ensure the active involvement of patients and carers in the way services are developed, delivered and evaluated.

The Matron will provide strong clinical leadership within the Services and be highly visible and accessible to patients. Leading by example he/she will drive up standards of clinical care and have the authority to get the essential components of care right for patients - clean wards and departments, quality care, ensuring patients are treated with dignity and respect, resolving problems for patients and relatives and ensuring high standards are maintained throughout the Services.

Training and qualifications

Essential criteria
- Qualified Nurse
- Registered with appropriate regulatory body (NMC)
- Evidence of CPD
- Management qualification or relevant experience
- ENB 998 or equivalent teaching course.
- Step 1-3 critical care competencies

Desirable criteria
- Master’s degree or equivalent post basic training
- Relevant Leadership Course

Experience

Essential criteria
- Experience of leading and delivering programmes of change within an acute NHS setting
- Experience of working with patient groups
- 5 years post registration experience including management and leadership experience
- Able to provide specialised advice concerning patient care
- Knowledge of budgets/financial control
- Extensive knowledge of HR Processes and policies
- Extensive knowledge of clinical governance and the quality agenda

Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of Serious Untoward incidents and process for managing these incidents
- Knowledge and experience of using/writing risk assessments
