An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Orthoptist to join our team of 8 Orthoptists and Glaucoma specialists based at Singleton Hospital. This is a Band 6, full time (37.5 hours weekly) permanent post which will be split between working in the Orthoptic clinic and as part of the Glaucoma multi-disciplinary team. As a forward thinking team of 8 Orthoptists we have taken opportunities to develop the skills of our workforce and extend clinical practice. Many of our team have gained recognition in their field of expertise including glaucoma, botulinum toxin clinics and medical retina.

You will be based at the Orthoptic Department, Singleton Hospital, Swansea as part of the surgical directorate working closely with 13 Consultant Ophthalmologists in the Ophthalmology team. You may be required to work at other Orthoptic units within the Health Board currently at Neath Port Talbot Hospital, Baglan, so the ability to travel between sites in a timely manner would be an advantage.

Duties will include a wide range of Orthoptic clinics including specialist paediatric and adult ocular motility clinics. In addition you will work within the Glaucoma team covering a range of clinics.You must be able to work as part of a team and show enthusiasm. Flexibility to adapt to different situations and work under pressure is essential.

Professional development is encouraged including participation in Orthoptic, Ophthalmology and multi-disciplinary audit. The team holds regular training events to ensure staff have opportunities to develop skills and network with colleagues.

The Orthoptic service is accredited for undergraduate Orthoptic students and participation in teaching students and other personnel is requested.

Applicants must hold a degree or diploma (or equivalent) in Orthoptics and state registration with the HCPC.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

The post requires an autonomous practitioner with highly skilled and specialised knowledge and testing techniques.

You will be involved in the diagnosis and management of conditions affecting binocular vision, functional vision, and ocular motility as well as examining and interpreting visual fields. You will also have an extended role in the area of Glaucoma using specialist skills to assess and manage all aspects of Glaucoma care.

You will take responsibility for the orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients referred directly to the orthoptic department from outside agencies and various departments within the organisation.

The caseload will include patients of all ages, including children with significant sight defects and adults with double vision or visual field loss.

You will formulate individual treatment programmes, discharge plans and onward referrals, using clinical reasoning, evidence based practice and a wide range of treatment options.

You will demonstrate clinical skills to junior doctors, student nurses, optometrists and other healthcare professionals, and teach orthoptic undergraduate students. You will be expected to actively participate in audit and clinical governance.
