**Service Overview**: The inpatient service is a 26 bedded ward where each patient is provided with the individual care needed to promote and maintain the best quality of life possible, for as long as possible. As well as providing specialist care for individuals during the final stages of their illness, we also provide short admission stays for patients who require symptom control to help stabilise their condition before returning home. A holistic package of care incorporating physical, psychological, social and spiritual support is offered to all patients and their families. Our friendly, multi-disciplinary team are on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; providing exemplary personalised care to ensure the safety, comfort and dignity of our patients.

**Job Summary**: Working with the Ward Manager you will deliver effective operational management of the inpatient unit nursing team at Douglas Macmillan Hospice. You'll ensure timely, responsive, and high-quality service is maintained and well organised for patients, their families and visitors to the hospice. You will be responsible for co-ordination of patient flow in and out of the inpatient unit, participation in the multidisciplinary decision making to support these patients and their families. To oversee that co-ordination and management of staffing including HR issues.

To provide expert role modelling and leadership to the IPS promoting a culture of growth and positivity. Engendering a positive working environment with an emphasis on professionalism, teamwork, and co-operation. You will take responsibility for creating and maintaining a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring high quality standards of care are maintained. Duties & Responsibilities Leadership and Management 1.Assist the Ward Manager to lead and manage the IPS nursing service ensuring a high quality of care is maintained to patients and their families and by being a visible presence 2.Provide effective leadership to the inpatient unit team, act as an ambassador for best practice and with honesty and integrity 3.Provide professional clinical expertise to all nursing staff within the inpatient unit, providing advice, coaching and mentorship 4.As directed, or in the absence of the Ward Manager, ensure the appropriate and equitable allocation of work and resources, including the IPS rotas, ensuring appropriate skill mix and agreed staff to patient ratio, annual leave, study leave monitoring, sickness and absence in the work place, or delegate as appropriate 5.As directed, or in the absence of the Ward Manager oversee the line management for IPS staff, conducting and ensuring effective and timely performance management (including competence) of individual staff members in line with the hospice's policy 6.As delegated by the Ward Manager to investigate and provide reports (with conclusions/recommendations) following incidents and complaints 7.Participate in the recruitment of nursing and care staff 8.Participate, contribute, and lead as required, in multi professional meetings, acting as the patients' advocate and representing nursing 9.Maintain effective clear communication systems to keep staff informed and facilitate and encourage two-way communication 10.Be an effective change agent 11.In the absence of the Ward Manager, oversee volunteers within the inpatient unit and work with Volunteer Co-ordinator 12.To ensure adherence to hospice and professional policies and procedures.

Clinical service 1.To ensure the appropriate, timely and effective admission and discharge of patients 2.To ensure the continued co-ordination of the content and delivery of the inpatient services patients care plans, and ensure the overall quality and provision of nursing care of patients and their families 3.To assess the needs of patients and their carers and identify their respective physical, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual needs 4.To work within a team framework, collaborating with colleagues and members of other disciplines 5.To use a proactive and sensitive approach with patients and relatives to enable involvement in advance care planning 6.To assess peoples information needs and provide relevant information to meet those needs 7.To ensure provision of appropriate nursing interventions 8.To follow the hospice and Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards on Medicines Management. 9.To liaise and communicate professionally with colleagues from the members of the MDT. 10.To participate in Clinical Audit and research programme 11.To foster positive working relations with other healthcare professionals and lead by example 12.Take a collective lead in clinical governance, initiating areas of audit to improve practice 13.As required, attend and contribute to the writing of clinical policies and be an active member of clinical working groups 14.To support colleagues, volunteers and students in managing bereavements, and provide support for distressed patients, bereaved relatives and visitors Dev
