**Job summary**:
In May 2021, the Prime Minister made a statement in the House of Commons that the Government will establish an independent public inquiry on a statutory basis, with full powers under the Inquiries Act of 2005.

In December 2021, Baroness Heather Hallett DBE was appointed as Chair to the Inquiry and following an initial set up phase we are now looking for exceptional staff to join the Inquiry team.

The Inquiry are seeking two Private Secretaries who will work with the Chair and the Secretary of the Inquiry as well as the wider Senior Leadership team.

The Inquiry sits independent of the Government with the Cabinet Office acting as the sponsoring department.

**Job description**:
The Private Secretaries will report to the Head of Private Office, delivering high-quality Private Office service for the Inquiry. Key responsibilities include:

- Providing Private Secretary support for the Chair and the Secretary of the Inquiry. This will involve accompanying them to meetings and hearings, providing official readouts, disseminating information across the organisation, following up on actions and decisions, triaging incoming issues using clear judgement to escalate or manage appropriately and providing clear written and verbal advice in a high pressure environment.
- Managing the preparation of day packs and meeting papers for the Chair and Secretary, working with senior colleagues across the Inquiry to ensure high quality and robust advice is provided in a timely manner.
- Managing the forward look of work for the principals ensuring the provision of joined up support, successfully managing competing pressures on their time.
- Leading on a variety of portfolios within the Private Office and ensuring a seamless delivery to the Senior Leadership Team.
- Line management responsibility for a Diary Manager ensuring they receive the right balance of support and stretch and overseeing the efficient running of the Chair and Secretary’s diaries.
- Work flexibly to cover colleagues by ensuring strong relationships with all senior leaders.
- Support the Head of Private Office to create and maintain robust systems and processes to support workstreams across the team and provide gold standard service at all times.
- Develop ways of working that recognises the importance of strong governance to the success of the Inquiry.

- A high level of judgement in order to triage issues effectively and manage relationships on behalf of senior leaders
- Exceptional attention to detail

- The ability to engage professionally with senior leaders in challenging, fast paced situations.
- A team player with a willingness to work flexibly and collaboratively
- Ability to remain professional and act with integrity in a pressurised environment and in handling confidential information;
- Excellent IT skills

Experience of working in a Private Office environment would be beneficial, but is not essential.
