Data protection sits at the core of all this activity and it aims to protect individuals’ rights and freedoms in relation to the processing of their personal data. ICO is working to address novel challenges new and cutting-edge technology poses to these rights.

**Job description**:
The Technology and Digital Economy Departments work closely together and specialise in new and emerging technologies that process personal data and their impact on individuals’ rights and freedoms.

As Principal Policy Adviser you will support our work on ensuring services and products at the forefront of innovation comply with data protection, respect individuals’ rights and bring wider benefits to society and the economy.

You will be a part of an influential regulator both internationally and domestically, consulting key decision-makers on tech policy, and will influence high-impact policy-making at the forefront of innovation.
- Provide expert insight into urgent issues at the intersection of data protection and technology, anticipate emerging issues and produce incisive policy responses.
- Lead multi-disciplinary teams, drawing on expertise and skillsets across the ICO, to produce high-impact policy outcomes.
- Explore, build and maintain excellent relationships with internal and external stakeholders, by representing the ICO in a variety of forums, and negotiating with counterparts to ensure we are able to develop, communicate, influence and maintain a clear approach aligning with our policy lines.
- Provide strategic advice to the Commissioner and his senior leadership team, including the delivery of timely and high-quality briefings.
- Proactively develop legislative expertise, keeping abreast of developments in all information rights legislation and regulations overseen by the ICO.
- Lead fast-paced policy projects to explore the implications of specific developments in technology and innovation in greater depth, and make recommendations on the appropriate course of action.

**Person specification**:

- Educated to degree level or equivalent, or substantial work experience demonstrating graduate level ability.
- Significant relevant experience, which could have been gained from a policy, operational or corporate environment.
- Experience of working in a technology and/or digital focused environment, with significant privacy, innovation and/or regulatory elements.
- Experience of leading successful projects from concept to sign-off.
- Experience of interpreting complex information which could include legislation or operational rules and procedures.
- Excellent written communication skills, including the abilities to analyse complex information and legislation, and to formulate clear and persuasive arguments for a range of audiences.
- Excellent understanding of the technology sector and internet economy, including associated data protection and internet safety issues.
- A strong understanding of the wider parliamentary, democratic, political and regulatory framework in the UK and overseas is essential.
- Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills and an ability to represent the ICO with a range of stakeholders.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to negotiate and maintain good relationships with senior stakeholders in all areas of public life and make sound judgements.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
- Ability to travel to meetings and events in the UK and overseas (possibly outside office hours).
