**Job description**:
The post-holder will report to a Grade 6 in the Transport Infrastructure Planning Casework Unit and will have responsibility for managing staff undertaking work on the processing of statutory orders and consents.

The post holder acts as the Approving Officer - making recommendations to the Deputy Director regarding the clearance of decisions made on behalf of the Secretary of State or making those decisions under approved delegations.

**_ Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: _**
- The direct and indirect line management of around 16 staff, leading and motivating them in delivering continuous improvement and engaging staff in delivering efficiencies.
- Ensuring the rapid, but accurate, processing of various casework by Casework Team members, completing appropriate technical checks of processes and decisions, where appropriate considering Inspectors’ reports and recommendations, draft decision letters and providing feedback to the drafter.
- Explaining legislative requirements and ensuring that these are observed.
- Ensuring throughputs of cases meet the agreed targets by monitoring performance, identifying issues and taking a risk-based approach to processing that maintains good relations with stakeholders, high accuracy and meets Ministerial deadlines.
- Working closely with DfT delivery partners, The Planning Inspectorate and Penna (our publishers) to maintain relationships, share best practices and achieve joined up results.
- Control of a delegated budget for publishing statutory notices and public inquiries. Liaise with Finance Business Partners regarding budget forecast and with Procurement on contract relationships.

**About You**

To thrive in this role, you will need to have experience of analysing large volumes of complex data to tight deadlines.

You are someone that can lead teams working to demanding deadlines and can be flexible and adapt to changing priorities while working closely with senior staff on a regular basis.

You will be able to confidently draft and simplify complex information and present this information factually and persuasively to those at senior levels. You will have experience of making decisions and presenting them to a variety of audiences.

**Additional Information**

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

This role will require occasional travel, likely to be once a quarter.
