This highly visible role offers a fantastic opportunity to work within Natural England’s pivotal and fast-moving Governance Team. The role offers an opportunity to shine and show your strengths at the highest level in the organisation, as the activities involved are crucial to the operation of NE Non-Executive Board and the NE Executive Committee.

The Governance Team sits within Legal and Governance. The Team is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of business of the NE Non-Executive Board and NE Executive Committee.

The post holder will be responsible for providing advice/guidance on governance procedures, managing logistics (face-to-face, hybrid or online), commissioning papers, producing packs of papers for meeting attendees, capturing and following up actions. The highest levels of attention to detail and calm problem solving will be required to maintain Natural England’s professional reputation with the Non-Executive Board and high-profile external stakeholders. Prior experience of governance is preferable, but training and development will be provided as required on all aspects of the role.

The post will provide an opportunity to make a real personal contribution to areas of key importance to Natural England; and to develop organisational and technical understanding at the heart of the organisation. There is plenty of opportunity for development, particularly through exposure to the workings of Natural England governance forums at the highest levels of the organisation.

Job description

We are looking for a dynamic and proactive Lead Adviser to work within the Governance Team.

**Responsibilities will include**:

- Working with the Senior Adviser, to provide advice on governance procedures to ensure issues are considered at the appropriate sub-committees/groups before escalation to the Executive and/or Board.
- To schedule and arrange logistics for monthly (approx. 10 per year) Board Meetings. This will involve sourcing and securing external venues for meetings, site visits and Board stakeholder dinners, ensuring best value for money.
- Managing the logistics at Board Meetings, including responding to Board Members’ requests, managing hybrid technology, liaising with the venue or on-site staff to ensure smooth running of the timetable.
- Commissioning Board papers, producing packs of papers for meeting attendees, drafting minutes, capturing and following up actions, maintenance of Board Member Register of Interests.
- Scheduling and planning twice-monthly Board Briefing sessions, liaising with NE leads and Board Members to set up appropriate arrangements.
- Liaison with other secretariats regarding co-ordination and scheduling of Board sub-groups (REMCOM and NELAP); and periodic review of Board sub-group Terms of Reference to ensure correct and up-to-date.
- Contribution to the wider Governance Team, by stepping in to provide secretariat to NE Executive Committee when required. This occasional activity could include commissioning papers, producing agendas, drafting minutes.
- Point of contact for Board Members on practical issues and responsibility for processing their expenses claims.
