You will be working with Dr Vera Slavtcheva-Petkova, Dr Emily Harmer and Dr Rosalynd Southern on a project aimed at improving online safety for journalists and politicians, especially women, in collaboration with civil society and UNESCO.
Online violence against journalists and politicians is of growing concern, compromising their ability to serve society with women being disproportionately affected. This project will enhance our existing cooperation with UNESCO and NGOs working on online safety for public figures to provide them with systematic research and encourage states and social media companies to address these issues globally.
You will be required to assist the project team with the setting up and running of an open online platform for academics to share their research on digital safety, disinformation and hate speech. You will also be required to write a policy report on the topic. Other key duties will involve liaising with UNESCO and NGO representatives working in the area of online safety for public figures, participating in the World Press Freedom Day event in May and organising a workshop in Liverpool with invited civil society representatives.
**You will join DigiPol**: The Centre for Digital Politics, Media and Society and the Department of Communication and Media at the University of Liverpool. DigiPol is an interdisciplinary centre that champions challenge-led collaborative and interdisciplinary research to address some of the most pressing research questions around digital media and democracy. This is a unique opportunity for a researcher passionate about freedom of expression and the safety of journalists and female politicians to work on these issues. The post is ideal for a person with prior experience of working with non-academic partners who is also a strong team player.
Any applicants who are still awaiting their PhD to be awarded should be aware that if successful, they will be appointed at grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that they have been successful in being awarded their PhD, they will be moved onto grade 7, spine point 31 from the date of their award.
This post is available on a fixed term basis until 31 July 2023.
