Estate Maintenance Assistant

**HAREWOOD ESTATE**
**JOB DESCRIPTION**
**ESTATE MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT**
**Background**
The Harewood Estate spans some 4000 acres and lies nestled between Leeds and Harrogate, set in the sweeping Yorkshire landscape designed by Lancelot "Capability" Brown 250 years ago. Recent years have seen a major overhaul of the directions and operations at Harewood to ensure they continue to protect their past while also staying relevant for the future. The Estate now has an increasingly diverse range of business interests including commercial units, residential properties, holiday cottages, arable and livestock farming, forestry, renewable energy generation, food production and hospitality.
Harewood has made great strides to become a leisure and lifestyle destination, undertaken extensive works to refurbish many Listed buildings and recently started a major 10-year landscape and heritage restoration and regeneration project (probably the biggest intervention since Brown’s time). The latter is funded via a Higher Tier Countryside Stewardship Scheme, which will restore damaged and degraded historic structures, ecosystems and natural processes, create new habitats, encourage greater biodiversity and enhance natural capital functions.
Most works are delivered by an inhouse Estate team, who are self-motivated, inspiring, skilled and dedicated people with a passion for Harewood, the environment, conservation and the outdoors. They want to play a part in initiatives that protect the Estate’s Listed buildings and features while also finding solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises that result in improved landscapes for future generations.
**The Role/Job Purpose**
Harewood has a range of tenants, guests and visitors who either live or work on the Estate. Overall upkeep of the Estate is no small task; holiday cottage gardens need regular mowing, areas around our commercial offices need to be kept neat and tidy, roads and paths need sweeping and maintaining, bins and recycling need collecting. As well as day to day tasks there are more seasonal jobs to undertake. For example, as part of a Higher Tier Stewardship Scheme, the Estate is undertaking a large programme of tree planting during the winter across the Listed Park and Gardens area.
An opportunity has arisen for an Assistant to join the team to support the above works in the Grounds and Forestry Departments. The job is physically demanding and requires the incumbent to be physically fit and in full health. Ongoing medical issues should be highlighted before employment is offered to facilitate any future needs that need to be catered for the employee to carry out their role to the best of their ability.
The role will require both early starts and weekend working on occasion to allow grounds tasks to be undertaken when commercial offices are not in use. The position will report to the senior members of the team and broadly be split between grounds (Mar-Oct) and forestry (Nov-Feb) to support the annual programme of work.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure timely grass cutting of gardens and commercial areas using strimmers, push and ride on machinery.
- Assist with jet-washing, hedge cutting, leaf clearance, path maintenance etc.
- Rota for collection of bins and recycling.
- Assisting gardeners with horticultural tasks eg planting regimes, seeding, pruning and watering.
- Carrying out safety checks and maintenance of equipment to ensure that equipment is kept in a good working order.
- Operate grounds machinery with proper regard to health & safety procedures.
- Setting up machines and preparing power tools and other equipment for safe and effective use.
- Assist with set up & de-rig of high-profile events.
- Assisting the forestry team with winter tree planting
- Assisting with the repair and construction of fences around the Estate
- Assist with other areas of the grounds, forestry and farming departments as required
Skills and Experience Required
- Experience in a similar role of grounds management or large-scale gardening.
- Experience with grounds and gardening machinery and equipment.
- Experience of adhering to health and safety and risk assessment requirements.
- Works well with a team in order to complete large scale projects.

- Friendly, helpful and considerate personality (essential)
- Self-motivated and able to manage your own time to deadlines (essential)
