Background

The Harewood Estate spans some 4000 acres and lies nestled between Leeds and Harrogate, set in the sweeping Yorkshire landscape designed by Lancelot "Capability" Brown 250 years ago. The Estate has a diverse range of business interests including commercial units, residential properties, holiday cottages, arable and livestock farming, forestry, renewable energy generation, food production and hospitality. We are constantly working to protect our past while staying relevant for the future.

The Estate has embarked on a major 10-year landscape and heritage restoration and regeneration project (probably the biggest intervention since Brown’s time), which will restore damaged and degraded historic structures, ecosystems and natural processes, create new habitats, encourage greater biodiversity and enhance natural capital functions. These works will see the restoration of historic landscape features, planting of over 17,000 trees, creation of 70 hectares of wildflower meadow and 250 hectares of wood pasture parkland and new livestock facilities and grazing regimes.

This ambitious project has been made possible via funding from a Higher Tier Countryside Stewardship scheme and the Estate is looking to fill the roles needed to deliver the first two years of work. Role Profile
- Carrying out safety checks and maintenance of vehicles, machinery and equipment to ensure that they are kept in a good working order and adheres to health and safety regulations, including keeping accurate records and keeping workshop tidy
- Setting up machines and preparing power tools and other attachments for safe and effective use
- Carry our basic machinery repairs
- Working with a variety of agricultural machinery for soil preparation, planting of crops, harvesting and processing in order to assist in the delivery of our environmental restoration project and improving our grasslands and woodland. Activities will include:

- Harrowing, rolling and seeding areas to improve grassland diversity
- Grass cutting/topping
- Weed control including spot spraying, weed wiping and knapsack
- Green hay cuts and spreading
- Hay crop leading
- Assisting with the removal/repair and construction of fences around the Estate
- Assist with general maintenance of building and equipment - eg water trough installation
- Assisting Livestock team to maintain the highest welfare of Harewood’s native and rare breed livestock, tasks including working with Cattle, Sheep and Deer, daily checks and feeding
- Assist with other areas of the Maintenance, forestry and farming departments as required

Skills and Experience Required
- Experience of operating agricultural machinery, including tractors, trailers, telehandler, diggers, dumpers and quad bikes
- Experience of undertaking basic machinery repairs, welding experience desirable
- Full, clean driving licence with excellent driving skills
- Possess the appropriate qualifications through formal training to operate a range of farm machinery and attachments
- PA1/ PA2 and PA6 spraying certificates would be desirable.
- Experience of fence repairs/replacement
- Experience of identifying potential risks and adhering to health and safety requirements
- Experience in animal husbandry and handling techniques would also be advantageous
- Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care and Agriculture, Level 3 Diploma in Agriculture, City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Safe Working in Agriculture and Production Horticulture or other such appropriate qualification is desirable but not essential
- Self-motivated and able to manage your own time to deadlines
- Works well with a team in order to complete large scale projects

- There will be some weekend working so we have a TOIL system in operation or there is the opportunity for overtime where agreed in advance
- The role is offered on a 2 year fixed term contract with the possibility of extension depending on opportunities and funding at the end of this time
