We are looking for a highly skilled mental health nurse to shape and lead the delivery of excellent care for patients with mental health needs.

The Head of Nursing for mental health will be a registered mental health nurse who will provide strategic and operational leadership in the care of patients with mental health needs at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. The Head of Nursing for Mental Health will be professionally accountable to the Group Chief Nurse and will be responsible to the Group Head of Safeguarding.

The post holder will support teams to provide effective day to day leadership and management for mental health to ensure our ambitions in relation to safe and effective care of our patients are realised. The Head of Nursing for mental health will also lead the development of a strategy and plan for how we take the care of patients with mental health needs forward, working in collaboration with external partners to provide optimal experience and outcomes.

The Head of Nursing for mental health will be a skilled communicator able to communicate highly complex and sensitive information at all levels across multiple organisations. They will foster strong relationships across the Royal Free London Group as well as externally in the wider system.

Be responsible for the delivery of high quality and cost-effective enhanced care provision for patients with mental health needs.

To lead the development and implementation of a strategy for the care of mental health patients at RFL.

To ensure that the RFL has appropriate and up to date policies and frameworks, education and training packages to support and guide staff in caring for patients with mental as well as physical health needs.

In conjunction with the hospital Directors of Nursing and Divisional Directors of nursing, the Head of Nursing for mental health will be responsible for ensuring the appropriate and effective deployment of registered mental health nurses.

To ensure that the RFL has systems and processes and appropriately trained staff to ensure compliance with all relevant statutory legislation in relation to the Mental Health Act.

Establish and maintain close relationships and collaboration with colleagues in our partner mental health providers.

Design and lead delivery of significant transformational change regarding how we manage mental health in partnership with physical health, to meet Trust strategic and operational objectives across the organisation leading to measurable improvement in efficiency, safety and quality of care for patients.

Responsible for leading the implementation, delivery and governance of the mental health portfolio ensuring delivery of the plan.

Be a credible clinical leader in the care of patients with mental ill health.

Champion the mental health agenda across the Trust fostering co-production and collaboration.

Work in collaboration with the Group Chief Nurse, Hospital Directors of Nursing, Divisional Directors of Nursing, matrons and members of the multi-professional team both within RFL and with partner mental health Trusts in the design and delivery of patient pathways to enhance clinical outcomes, patient safety and patient experience.

Works collaboratively with external providers and agencies to align with regional and national initiatives and influence local strategy and development.

Act as principal nursing advisor to the Group Head of Safeguarding and Chief Nurse on matters related to mental health.

Ensure the correct sized and skilled workforce is in place to provide safe and effective care and that effective clinical supervision is in place for the hospital mental health matrons and mental health workforce.

Develops effective communication and training strategies with key stakeholders that meets nursing and midwifery professional needs and supports clinical best practice.

Lead on a range of quality improvement projects focused on improving the care of patient with mental ill health.

Be an active member of professional nursing and midwifery meetings.

Provide reports and presentations for Trust committees as requested by the Group Chief Nurse and Group Head of Safeguarding.

Act as an ambassador for the Trust and an effective and innovative role model and advocate for the profession, challenge outdated practices and maintain own credibility through demonstration of high standards of kind and compassionate care and leadership.
