Head of Flight Crew

Crawley, United Kingdom Virgin Atlantic Full time

**Job Details**:
**Salary**:Competitive

**Hours**: Full Time (Hybrid working with 3 days per week in the office)

**Location**:VHQ, Crawley

**Contract**:Permanent

**Closing Date**:May 21st 2023

**In a nutshell**:
At Virgin Atlantic Airways, we believe that everyone can take on the world, and it's our vision to become the most loved travel company. As we embark on this next exciting stage of our journey, we're harnessing our spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation to challenge the status quo.

We love to lead the way with fresh ideas. Bringing new approaches to the industry and remaining a loud and proud voice for positive change - be it on issues of sustainability, people, or our communities. So, if you're ready to take your career to new heights, read on

The role of Head of Flight Crew provides clear leadership for the pilot workforce and the Flight Crew Management team to enable high performance and inclusive behaviours with an absolute focus on employee engagement. You will be at the forefront of all industrial relations matters, working closely with our recognised union, the pilot and cabin crew community and the wider business.

**Day to day**:
One of key features of this role is to define and deliver the strategic people change agenda for Flight Operations, including leadership of industrial relations. This includes ongoing Company Counsel engagement, consultation and negotiations on key changes and major initiatives such as pay and lifestyle review. You will be responsible for broader BALPA/union governance to ensure effective oversight, collaborative workings and escalation structures are in place

You will lead the wider Flight Operations performance review (spanning Flight Crew Management, Chief Pilots and Standards and Training functions) to give a holistic approach, encompassing behaviours/conduct, operational delivery, maintenance of professional standards, wellbeing, and oversight of Command readiness.

The Head of Flight Crew will actively collaborate with operational people leaders across the business and functional experts in the People Team to foster pan-team operational collaboration that develops our approach to leadership, improves customer satisfaction, profitability and engagement, and promotes talent development/movement around the business.

You'll be accountable for delivery of the agreed pilot establishment, working closely with the training team, external providers and Crew Logistics to manage recruitment activity, all shrinkage and provide operational input to major training programmes such as SFF and Command upgrades that influence the establishment.

**About you**:
Are you an experienced people leader, with extensive experience of working within a highly unionised environment and an ability to deliver the best possible results for all parties? If so, and you meet or exceed the below criteria, we think you'd love this role
- A track record of leading industrial relations and managing change in a highly unionised environment - not necessarily in the aviation industry.
- Prior experience of successfully leading a large remote operational workforce in a fast paced, changing environment.
- The ability to work in a demanding environment, balancing multiple conflicting priorities for a wider range of stakeholders is essential. Previous experience in an aviation environment is desirable but not essential.
- Excellent knowledge of people policies and a good understanding of employment law.
- An excellent relationship builder at all levels and be able to communicate effectively with a variety of internal and external collaborators.
- Outstanding communication and influencing skills, being able to present to a relatively challenging audience and interpreting broad business issues in a way that it is relevant to the audience.
- Ideally, the individual should be educated to master's degree level, however equivalent level of knowledge or qualified through industry experience would be accepted.
