To achieve this, Unilever has partnered with the University of Liverpool in the Materials Innovation Factory (MIF) and it’s here that scientists have access to leading edge automation, robotics and instruments to build, test and refine new materials and products.

JOB PURPOSE

Fragrance is a critical enabler of product superiority and consumer delight for all of Home Care products. Your job purpose will be to provide analytical expertise in Fragrance and Malodour analysis to our global R&D Teams tasked with achieving better, more cost effective and more sustainable fragrance delivery from our products. You will use Gas Chromatography (GC) and Mass Spectrometry (MS) and other relevant analytical techniques as well as developing the relevant extraction and sample preparation techniques for a diverse range of measurements challenges. In the MIF you will have access to a wide range of leading-edge analytical capabilities, and you will use these to design and execute analytical workflows to meet the program needs of the global Homecare R&D fragrance and malodour needs.
- Material Innovation Factory Analysis Equipment

You will codesign work plans and deliver new insights and hypotheses via the manipulation and interrogation of complex data sets regarding the composition of raw materials, finished products and residues on surfaces. You will also utilise a wide range of capabilities related to formulation science in delivering to your measurement challenges.

As an experienced Volatiles Analytical Chemist, you will be responsible for method development and implementation delivering to the Home Care analytical experimental programme based in The Materials Innovation Factory, Liverpool. In addition, you will be working closely with Senior Analytical Chemists as well as other project teams based throughout the world in delivering to programs and building future measurement capabilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In this role your focus will be on the following key responsibilities
- Delivering to Global R&D work programs on fragrance and malodour using existing methods or developing new analytical methods
- Volatiles sampling, sample preparation and determination of volatiles in products, in headspace and their evolution during the consumer use process.
- Utilisation of additional MIF capabilities (beyond pure analytical chemistry) as applicable to build new insights and deliver to priority R&D programmes.
- Working as part of multi-disciplinary project teams, helping to define the project plans, delivering your own experimental programme; generating hypotheses and making recommendations to the project leaders to help progress the programme.
- Working with other Volatiles Analytical Chemists within R&D to build a robust community of practice to share insights and methods more widely.

ALL ABOUT YOU

We are looking for people with the right attitude, mindset, and competencies. Experience working on the analysis, measurement and characterisation of volatile compounds is an essential requirement. We are also looking for individuals who possess the following:

- Degree in Chemistry to BSc or MSc level or equivalent (as minimum)
- Fragrance and/or Malodour experience is essential
- Expertise in Mass Spectrometry including complex data manipulation, processing, and visualisation.
- Experience in sampling and methods of sampling from various substrates relevant to Fast Moving Consumer Goods.
- Ability to design and deliver pragmatic work plans to agreed timescales
- Great collaboration and communication skills and a willingness to work in an international team
- Preferably some skills related to formulation science
- Excellent organisational skills.
- Strong written and communication skills with previous experience working within a scientific research institute or industrial R&D team.
