- Job description- We are facing a climate emergency, and the Environment Agency is at the forefront of dealing with the biggest climate risks we face. We are responsible for safeguarding water resources in England and protecting the environment. As the water regulator, we take a strategic overview for protecting the environment, managing access to water through licensing and overseeing the actions water companies take to secure public water supplies. We are responding to ongoing drought in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Area, and have a critical role in balancing the needs of people, wildlife and the environment.
You will lead on the area’s tactical management of the drought incident, reporting directly to the Area Strategic Drought Lead. This is an exciting and diverse role and you will need to be flexible and adaptable in your approach, tackling high priority reactive tasks whilst keeping planned activities moving forward.
Your role will include:

- Leading tactical planning, preparedness, and response to the drought incident.
- Coordinating the activities of our area drought team and virtual permitting teams.
- Preparing internal and external reports and briefings, including routine national reporting.
- Working with other area and national drought teams and networks to share information and for technical support and advice.
- Liaising with the Water Company on their drought planning and programmes.
- Managing our cost recovery and financial tracking activities.
- The team- The role sits within the Environment, Planning and Engagement Department, but works alongside colleagues from across all area departments as well as national teams, working together as one team. You will draw on knowledge, information and skills from a range of local and national technical experts. You will work very closely with the Area Drought Lead, Area Drought Team, Virtual Permitting Teams and Area Incident Team.
- Experience/skills required- This role has a strong people-focus, requiring excellent communication and influencing skills and a proven ability to build strong internal and external relationships. It combines fast-paced, reactive tasks with steady, planned activities and requires excellent organisation and prioritisation skills. You must be able to use your initiative to proactively resolve problems and anticipate issues or needs. You will have experience of leading a team or group to deliver results. You must be able to demonstrate behaviours that embody equality, diversity and inclusion and can motivate and enthuse a diverse range of people. Good understanding or previous experience of water resources planning or environmental regulation would be beneficial, and a willingness to learn is essential.
