To meet the health care needs of the public in respect of the treatment of minor illness and injury, of which the UHP Minor Injuries Units treat in excess of 35,000 patients with classified minor injuries per annum.

Required to work independently to assess, diagnose, treat and discharge patients attending the Minor Injuries Unit, whose conditions fall within an identified range of competencies.

Provides education and supervision in the role of a competent assistant practitioner to Health Care Assistants, medical and nursing students.

After completion of a medicines module will provide medication for patients under Patient Group Directives and according to Trust Policy.

To have proven knowledge and understanding of National/trust and departmental standards.

To promote evidence-based care, which incorporates objectives set in documents, such as National Service Frameworks, NICE guidelines.

You’ll work alongside the Nurse Practitioners in providing patient focused care. Need to have excellent communication skills and be a real team player. If you are self-motivated, IT literate, with a keen eye for detail with the ability to manage a wide range of tasks and changing priorities and can be adaptable, with a passion for development and training then we would like to hear from you.

We are currently in the process of redesigning the band 4 role within our UTCs and MIUs so it is an exciting time to join our team. We have 4 units UTC Cumberland Centre in Devonport, Tavistock and Kingsbridge MIUs and ED Minors. Our teams are all friendly and hardworking and we have moulded a real positive working environment across all 4 sites.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who is able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

Works as a competent Band 4 Assistant Practitioners/Associate Practitioners, utilising specialist knowledge and decision-making skills to demonstrate clinical skills, to promote clinical excellence and ensure an optimum standard of nursing care is delivered from admission to discharge in a timely manner

To promote, maintain and monitor the best possible standards of care within the resources available, commensurate with Trust and Department policies and if registered within the framework of their governing body’s Professional Code of Conduct and the Band 4 Assistant Practitioners/Associate Practitioners competency framework.

Where applicable to administer medicines under Patient Group Directives/Patient Specific Directives as appropriate.

Liaises with appropriate agencies and members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure care in managed for ‘at risk’ patients on leaving the emergency department and/or hospital.

To work closely with members of the multi-disciplinary team both within the department and beyond to ensure care is delivered to the patient both effectively and efficiently.

To liaise with the NPs to refer patients to other professionals such as clinical specialities, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

To update other staff appropriately on clinical conditions of patients and maintain accurate documentation and computer records for patients in the department and on discharge.

Provide written, as well as verbal specialist advice in relation to the care of patients on discharge home from the emergency department.

To provide health promotion advice to patients and their families/carers to support the maintenance of their health and well-being.

To act as a mentor and resource for more junior colleagues, supporting and assisting them to provide care of the highest quality.

To ensure patient confidentiality is maintained in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
