London, United Kingdom Historic England Full time

Summary

You will have the opportunity to work and engage with a range of colleagues you will assist the London and South East Regional Team with the development and delivery of priority projects in the region, particularly focusing on stakeholder engagement activities to help deliver our Future Strategy and Corporate Plan aims related to heritage and Levelling Up, inclusion and diversity, and climate change adaptation.

The Level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship is offered as a 27 month Fixed Term Contract, and will be based in the London office.

What you will be doing

You will be working towards completion of your Stakeholder Engagement/Associate Project Manager Level 4 apprenticeship over the course of 24 months. 80% of your time will be spent in the workplace, and 20% of your time will be spent off the job, completing a training programme specially designed for your apprenticeship with a recognised training provider.

This role will be based in our London office but will also include an option of hybrid working and remote learning. The role will also require occasional travel and overnight stays to work with other team members, or to visit other Historic England offices. (All travel and subsistence costs for training purposes will be paid for by Historic England).

The work you will be involved in will help contribute to the championing of England’s unique historic environment and promote awareness of the work of Historic England to both the general public and community groups, as well as specialist audiences such as archaeologists, planners, property developers, architects and heritage craftspeople. In addition, you will complete a range of professional skills courses that will develop your overall career development.

You will be supervised by a line manager and a variety of staff across the regional team, a personal learning mentor and our early careers team. You will also be encouraged to have regular contact with other apprentices to share your experiences with each other through networking events throughout your apprenticeship.

At work (80% of your time) the experience you will gain will include:

- Working in a busy regional team with a wide range of heritage specialists within the government's statutory adviser on the historic environment
- Heritage sector knowledge, working with a wide variety of regional stakeholders, including heritage professionals, local authorities, community organisations and others
- Collaboration, research and IT skills, working with colleagues from across the organisation to learn and gather intelligence
- Developing and delivering projects that promote Historic England’s Future Strategy, Corporate Plan and our regional priorities related to Levelling Up, inclusion and diversity within the heritage sector and how heritage will contribute to climate change adaptation
- Project management skills, working through the life of a project from design, procurement and inception through to delivery and evaluation
- Verbal communication skills, engaging with a wide audience on the projects you are working on through a variety of mediums, for example team and external meetings, events and media
- Written communication skills, for example in preparing project documentation or providing briefing materials and reports

What will you learn

In training you will learn the background knowledge that will help you to see the bigger picture of work, including:

- How the heritage sector works: The people, organisations, policy and legislation that make up this fascinating area of work.
- The fundamentals of archaeological, landscape and architectural history.
- The skills required to identify different types of heritage sites and objects and to assess their condition.
- The knowledge and skills required to analyse, date, monitor and conserve a range of historic places.
- The value of heritage to the local economy, to the communities living nearby and to people who visit the heritage sites we help to protect, enhance and reveal.
- The professional language and terminology that will develop your communication in the workplace, in particular when making recommendations concerning the historic environment.

This apprenticeship will give you knowledge skills and experience that will greatly enhance your future career prospects. Once you have successfully completed your apprenticeship you will have gained 24 months of work experience and a solid grounding in stakeholder engagement, communications and project management, as well as specialist knowledge of the heritage sector. For this apprenticeship you may also become a student member of the Associate for Project Management (APM). You will be eligible for progression to associate membership upon successful completion of the apprenticeship. While we cannot guarantee an offer of a permanent post within Historic England at the end of your apprenticeship, we will be providing you with a solid foundation of skills and experience.
