West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust is looking to appoint a Band 3 MLA to join our dynamic and evolving team within the Microbiology Department at Watford General Hospital.

The department is accredited to UKAS ISO 15189:2012 standards. We serve a population of approximately half a million and we processes over 420,000 tests per year providing a comprehensive diagnostic service including Bacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Infectious Disease Serology and Molecular testing.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, and hard-working team player with a keen eye for detail to join our very busy Microbiology team. Your duties shall involve work in Bacteriology, Mycology and Parasitology. You will be expected to work closely with other team members in the receipt, checking, recording and preparation of samples using the LIMS, and equipment such as analysers, fridges, centrifuges, incubators etc.

Participate in processing of Serology and Molecular samples. Loading blood culture bottles onto the blood culture analyser and removal of negative samples. All duties and tasks should be in accordance with SOPs and if difficulties are encountered these should be referred to the Band 4 Associate Practitioner, Biomedical Scientist or Senior BMS as relevant.

Other Responsibilities

Maintain stocks of reagents, laboratory ware and other consumable items in the appropriate areas of the laboratory.

Help to manage stock by informing the Laboratory Manager or deputies when stock levels are running low or are in excess.

Ensure that stock is rotated when new kits arrive and check that all in use kits are within expiry dates.

Communicate authorised results to medical staff, nursing staff and GP’s, referring any requests for further information to BMS staff.

Sort and send dirty laboratory protective coats to the laundry. Sort and distribute clean coats to staff.

Provide cover for the pathology stores in the absence of the Pathology store person.

Prepare and pack samples to be sent by parcel post and transport daily to the post room.

To undertake other duties, which are, considered to be necessary for the effective management of the department.

Computing

Input request and result information onto the laboratory computer system, checking the accuracy of the data supplied as required.

Use the computer enquiry functions to deal with telephone enquiries relating to confidential results, within the departmental guidelines.

Report any problems or discrepancies detected to the LIMS Super User.

Health and Safety

To have a working knowledge of current departmental Health and Safety codes of practice.

To adhere to all relevant safety regulations and ensure safe working practices within all sections of the laboratory.

To report all accidents and incidents to the laboratory manager and to record these correctly.
