Reading, United Kingdom Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust Full time

We are currently looking to recruit a self-motivated, reliable employee relations specialist to cover a maternity leave vacancy. You will need sound knowledge of employment law and experience of delivering a comprehensive ER service to line managers and senior leaders. Although flexibility for hybrid working is available, on-site attendance covering 3 days per week is a requirement of this role.

The main responsibilities for the role are to provide consistent sound ER advice and support to managers; to help ensure effective and fair treatment of staff in accordance with employment law and Trust policy and procedures and in line with Just and Learning Culture principles. This will include matters of performance, attendance, conduct and resolution, terms and conditions, organisational change and supporting complex ER casework involving preparation for employment tribunal proceedings. With proven experience in ER and supporting more junior colleagues you will undertake a senior role within the team.

Excellent communication is essential and you will be required to work on your own initiative as well as part of a wider team, with the ability to prioritise and manage your workload effectively. A working knowledge or an understanding of a Just and Learning Culture within the NHS would be beneficial to the role.

1. To provide consistently sound advice and support to managers on all aspects of staff management.

2. To keep managers up-to-date on the Trust’s Workforce procedures and relevant employment legislation, helping them to adhere to their Trust and legal responsibilities.

3. To work with managers on the effective management and control of their staffing, advising them on the planning and implementation of any changes.

4. To contribute to the fair and effective operation of the Trust's systems for pay and terms and conditions, including the national Agenda for Change, through identifying any pay and terms and conditions anomalies, designing and developing and advising on any solutions, and (depending on the nature and scope of the anomaly) leading on implementation.

5. To provide advice and support to managers to help ensure the effective, efficient and fair treatment of staff in accordance with employment law and Trust policy and procedures. To keep the effectiveness of procedures under review, making recommendations concerning any changes. To work with managers on ways of overcoming any identified recruitment difficulties.

The Town of Reading sits on the River Thames and is served by great road and rail links to London, Oxford, and Southampton. With excellent leisure and shopping facilities, and a thriving cultural scene, Reading is a wonderful place to live, work, and play and provides excellent facilities
for families, including some of the best state and private schools in the UK.
The CQC recently rated the care provided by The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust as good.

Our values; Compassionate, Aspirational, Resourceful, Excellent, reflect the type of Trust we aspire to be and you can join our dedicated and
talented staff to make this happen.

1. To contribute to the development and updating of the Trust policies, procedures and practice, helping to ensure that they comply with statutory employment law and case law, and contribute to the development of effective staff management practices across the Trust.

2. To design and deliver specific workforce training programmes, reviewing and evaluating their effectiveness. To contribute to the identification of future staff learning and development needs in support of the Trust's business needs.

3. As agreed, to provide expertise and support on the implementation across the Trust of specified national and Trust initiatives and projects.

4. As required, to research specific workforce related management topics, using sources from inside and outside of the NHS as appropriate. To make proposals on changes and improvements to practice and policies in the Trust.

5. To contribute to the provision of a quality service across the Trust through:

- The provision of advice to managers and staff whenever appropriate.
- Membership of, or support to, formal Trust groups or bodies organised by the Workforce Directorate, e.g. Joint Staff Consultative Committee as requested and appropriate
- To support and cover for other colleagues within the Employee Relations team as required.

6. To provide support and development opportunities to more junior colleagues through both formal and informal means dealing with more complex issues on behalf of junior colleagues where appropriate.
