Bath, United Kingdom Wessex Water Full time

Do you have a thirst for progressing your career and improving the environment? If so, we have an amazing opportunity for a Water Resources Placement Student to join our Water Resources Strategy team

**What you'll do**:
We are looking for an enthusiastic, technically skilled and hard-working graduate to join us in developing our catchment-based planning.

Joining a dynamic team of professionals, you will build on our existing options work and help us develop new investment options. Through a catchment-based approach, you will explore whether these options can provide multiple benefits.

You will explore new options to hold back water and slow flows in catchments, such as new reservoirs or more nature-based solutions, which can benefit downstream abstraction during droughts and help mitigate flood risk.

You will also work in collaboration with the broader team and across the business, as well as with the West Country Water Resources Group.

The role will require you to develop our catchment-based approach for options development and appraisal to feed into our next business plan in 2029.

Depending on your technical experience, this may include:

- reviewing available tools and methodologies to undertake catchment-based planning
- working with hydrologists across water companies and Bristol University to explore catchment water balance under future climate change and the potential benefits of slowing flows
- reviewing and identifying options available in specific catchments to store water and slow flows, as well as assessing their scalability relative to water balance need
- implementing an options appraisal exercise in a pilot catchment to identify the best options to meet catchment needs, public water supply and other drivers
- supporting wider team functions for supply forecasting and drought management.

**What you'll need**:
This is a role where you will be required to have a sound understanding of IT systems and software.

You will be working alongside other technically skilled people and liaising more broadly within and outside the business. Communicating with a range of audiences is therefore important for the role, both to gather information and disseminate outputs of your work.

Role requirements include:

- programming experience in R, Python or Matlab
- experience running software packages, including statistical software, or running simulations on water systems, eg, EPANET or Infoworks
- the ability to develop, follow and maintain procedures to ensure the accurate maintenance of technical workflows
- excellent communication skills
- being methodical with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work using your own initiative
- experience in catchment hydrology.

We don't expect you to cover all bases here We're looking for someone who is enthusiastic, has a good base knowledge, wants to develop their skills in the role and can help make a real difference in how we plan to improve the environment.

**What you'll receive**:

- Total pension contributions up to 20%.
- Career progression and professional development opportunities.
- 25 days' holiday rising to 28 with length of service.
- The opportunity to buy up to 10 days' holiday and sell up to five every year.
- A healthcare package that allows you to claim back healthcare costs.
- Life assurance of up to eight times your salary.
- A new electric car in exchange for part of your gross salary.
- Cashback and discounts from more than 3,000 retailers.
- One paid volunteering day each year.
- Enhanced family leave and pay arrangements.
- An interactive health and wellbeing platform.
- Support from mental health first aiders.
- A £1,000 referral fee if you recommend someone to work for us.
