We have an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Environmental Scientist to join our Environmental Investigations team working within the Water Quality department.

**What you'll do**:
You will play a key role in developing data analysis capabilities. This will involve supporting investigations into water quality, with opportunities to work alongside teams delivering investigations into water resources and biodiversity.

Reporting to the Senior Environmental Scientist, your role will involve:

- water quality monitoring and collecting other environmental data
- supporting with the QA of data collected for use within our environmental investigations
- developing tools to support the environmental investigations team with complex environmental modelling challenges
- supporting our Smart Rivers team with the analysis of data from our water quality sensor network
- assisting in the development of data science guidelines and standards to ensure good working practices
- the maintenance of databases for environmental data
- assisting with the production of reports on our investigations for our regulators
- assisting the wider team with other environmental monitoring such as macroinvertebrate surveys, fish surveys and catchment walkover surveys.

**What you'll need**:
In addition, you will need:

- a scientific approach to data handling, interpretation, management and reporting
- excellent written and verbal presentation skills, including the ability to write clear, thorough, and coherent scientific reports
- computer literacy, including Microsoft Office
- an understanding of the environmental issues affecting the water industry
- good time management and organisational skills
- a strong work ethic with the desire to learn more about the environment and new technical skills
- a valid full UK driving licence
- to be a strong swimmer due to the potential to work near open water.

It would also be desirable for you to have:

- experience in data manipulation, analysis and reporting using Python, R or a similar programming language
- experience with the git version control language
- experience with databases and the ability to write SQL
- experience analysing spatially referenced data, either using GIS software, such as ArcMap, ArcPro or QGIS, or through other methods
- knowledge of statistical analysis for hypothesis testing, time series analysis and modelling
- an understanding of machine learning methods
- an understanding of environmental legislation regarding water quality
- experience in environmental monitoring.
