- Job description- This is an opportunity to tackle a high-profile crime that is also a strategic priority for the Environment Agency: illegal exportation of waste.
As a field-based Officer, you will maintain oversight of a list of high-risk waste export load sites across a relatively large geographical area within the South East and surrounding area.
We’ll look to you to plan interventions and make unannounced inspections to waste management facilities. You’ll also gather information and intelligence, implement intervention measures to prevent illegal waste export, and impose risk ratings.
The role will require you to drive and hold a current licence, a vehicle will be provided.
The role will be based across the South East area and occasionally at other locations throughout the Country. The EA operates a flexible ‘hybrid working’ model that allows employees to work from home when appropriate and practical.
You will regularly report into the leadership team of your plans for regulating sites across your area and be the lead in engagement for all internal and external stakeholders with in your area.
You will work on operations and projects within the wider team and for other departments as and when required.
Documentation of your work is an important part of the role and you may be required to complete statements to support any investigations.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
- The team- You will be working closely with a dispersed team comprising of both office and field-based officers.
You will input and assist your senior technical officers to drive the operational activity of the team. Highlight the current risk and where the opportunities lie within waste exports.
You will work within the Illegal waste exports team supporting the wider team on operational outcomes.
The Illegal Waste Exports Team is within the Intelligence and Partnerships department.
- Experience/skills required- The role is a customer front facing role and as a foundation, we expect you to have:

- Strong IT skills and the confidence to learn new systems
- Experience in coaching or offering technical guidance
