Oxford Oxfordshire, United Kingdom The Institute Full time

We are seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatician/Data Scientist to join our department and assist in the Cardiovascular Initiative, part of the MRC and NIHR funded Rare Disease Research UK network (RDRUK; ).

The Cardiovascular Initiative is bringing researchers from across the UK together to tackle key challenges in our understanding of rare inherited cardiovascular conditions (ICCs). ICCs represent a challenging health burden, with at least 1 in 200 people affected with a rare cardiovascular condition. They include the commonest causes of sudden death in young adults and the leading causes of heart transplantation. The Cardiovascular Initiative seeks to harness genetic and clinical datasets generated as part of routine patient care to transform our understanding of these disorders and improve our ability to diagnose and treat patients.

The position forms part of a new collaboration between the National Rare Disease Registration Service (NDRS), NHS Genomic Medicine Services, DECIPHER, and other key project collaborators. The successful candidate will play a lead role in Project 1 - linking data from NHS specialist genetic testing laboratories to create a national ICC variant database for improved interpretation of genetic variation.

Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Contributing to the overall planning of studies
  2. Managing your own work and administrative activities
  3. Co-ordinating multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines
  4. Communicating effectively with colleagues and collaborators

You are required to hold a degree in Computer Science or a Health Informatics discipline OR relevant Biological Science with demonstrable abilities in informatics or computing. You should also have a strong specialist knowledge and experience in bioinformatics including familiarity with high throughput sequencing data and handling and processing of large genomic datasets. Experience in the integration of genomic and non-genomic clinical data would be desirable.

This is a full-time appointment (part-time to be considered) on a fixed-term contract for 2 years funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). You will be based at the Oxford Molecular Genetics Laboratory, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Churchill Hospital, Oxford, OX3 9DS with opportunities for remote/hybrid working.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online; you will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement which explains how you meet the selection criteria for the post.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 04 June 2024 can be considered. Interviews are scheduled to place at the end of June.
