To provide support to all learners at BAJ through the effective provision of welfare and pastoral care within BAJ and signposting to appropriate external support.
Proactively support tutors, learners and other staff members in all matters relating to learner wellbeing. To provide a world-class technical and creative education to INSPIRE, NURTURE and TRAIN the next generation of jewellers.

Lead responsibility for safeguarding and learner and vulnerable adult protection (including online safety).
Take responsibility on behalf of the organisation for day to day safeguarding management, following DfE statutory Guidance, specifically Keeping Children safe in Education.
Promote a positive culture of information sharing which leads to effective safeguarding processes being followed.
Undertake suitable training to maintain competence and knowledge of safeguarding requirements, Local Authority/Police activity and good practice.

Communicate with appropriate staff and managers on issues and concerns that could impact on the delivery of quality of outcomes for learners with respect to their wellbeing, suggest improvements and prioritise tasks
Work proactively with young people to provide reinforcement of effective learning and good behaviour
Maintain accurate, confidential and up-to-date documentation of all learners relating to pastoral care and wellbeing, and Safeguarding reporting, ensuring effective communication as needed with appropriate staff
Provide additional support to potentially vulnerable learners - for example those with special needs or disabilities
Work with the Quality Manager to review and update all policies and procedures relating to learner wellbeing including evaluation and monitoring systems
Spearhead and annual review and update to Safeguarding policies and procedures and deputise as necessary to ensure all matters relating to safeguarding are identified and acted on appropriately
Engage with all learners about their experience of pastoral support at BAJ, and provide feedback to the Quality Manager
Compile and collate evaluation data for strategic and operational decision making
Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of actions taken following concerns raised around learner welfare and safeguarding
Support the collection of destination data to ensure the college has a good understanding of the impact of qualifications on future life chances for learners.
Refer cases of suspected abuse to the local authority social care as required;
Support staff who make referrals to local authority social care;
Support staff who make referrals to the Channel programme;
Refer cases where a person is dismissed or left due to risk/harm to a children and vulnerable adults to the Disclosure and Barring Service as required; Act as a point of contact with the other safeguarding partners;
Liaise with the Head of Academy to inform them of issues- especially ongoing enquiries under section 47 of the Children Act 1989 and police investigations;
As required, liaise with the “case manager” and the designated officer(s) at the local authority for child protection concerns in cases which concern a staff member;
Liaise with relevant staff on matters of safety and safeguarding (including online and digital safety) and when deciding whether to make a referral by liaising with relevant agencies;
Ensure the organisation is aware of any students who may require specific safeguarding needs and have specific vulnerabilities.
Training

The designated safeguarding lead should undergo training to provide them with the knowledge and skills required to carry out the role. This training should be updated at least every two years. Additionally, they should refresh their training at regular intervals via formats such as newsletters, meeting other designated safeguarding leads, etc. Ensure each member of staff has access to, and understands, the school’s or college’s child protection policy and procedures, especially new and part time staff;
Ensure that all staff are fully trained in safeguarding and know how to spot and raise concerns;
Encourage a culture of listening to learners and taking account of their wishes and feelings, among all staff, in any measures the school or college may put in place to protect them.
The designated safeguarding lead should always be available (during school or college hours) for staff in the school or college to discuss any safeguarding concerns.
