The Role
We are looking for that rare individual able to operate comfortably at both operational and Faculty levels. They should be as able of managing the fire alarm system for MECD as they are of influencing Faculty decision-makers, supporting the development of comprehensive plans and ensuring they are communicated effectively to a wide stakeholder base.

The Person
You will have the expertise and confidence to lead the day-to-day management of the MECD emergency organisation, ensuring compliant emergency and incident response measures exist in all buildings in which FSE has an interest and supporting the development and implementation of effective continuity and wider resilience measures across the Faculty.

The successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate they have:

  • A relevant fire, emergency, incident management, business continuity or risk qualification.
  • Specialist knowledge of the relevant fire safety and emergency response regulations, with a proactive approach to their implementation.
  • Detailed knowledge of the practical operation of fire detection and alarm systems, including the means of sounding an evacuation signal, silencing the alarm and monitoring the situation until the system has been re-set.
  • The capacity to work accurately and precisely under pressure and to respond calmly during urgent situations.
  • Excellent oral communication skills with the ability to explain complex information in an accessible manner, both face-to-face and via communication devices.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and develop effective working relationships with staff, students and external parties of all levels of seniority.
  • Significant experience of commanding emergencies in a large complex building of multi-disciplinary usage.
  • Extensive experience of drafting and editing emergency plans, standard operating procedures and report writing.
  • Experience of auditing and developing business continuity and wider resilience plans for a large organisation.
  • Experience of training and developing staff in emergency planning and incident management and running exercises to test / evaluate emergency / incident response capabilities.

Ideally you will also have experience of multi-agency response arrangements and JESIP and of working within the HE sector or an equivalent science and engineering related environment.
