London, United Kingdom Currie & Brown Group Limited Full time

Currie & Brown is one of the leading International physical asset management and construction consultancies, dedicated to advising clients worldwide with our expertise and experience in multiple sectors and services. We are differentiated by our people, innovation and reputation with a genuine global office network.

Our people, from the first-day apprentice to senior management make our business what it is today. Everybody in the Currie & Brown family, no matter how experienced they are, plays their own unique part in our success and have fun along the way.

The role – what is it we would like you to do?

Currie & Brown have an immediate requirement for a part-time group risk and compliance director. The role will suit an individual who has worked within the construction industry or professional services in a commercial operations role, or in a similar compliance role.

The purpose of the role is to oversee the governance framework in place at Currie & Brown, to deliver a programme of internal audit work covering a broad scope, and to support the business on compliance matters.

The position is a group role across all Currie & Brown entities and reporting to the Chief Executive Officer. This will require some international travel which can generally be planned proactively by the role holder.

The role has a current base within our London office, however there can be flexibility on the office location and the role could be suited to home working due to its international scope.

The incoming candidate will be provided with a full handover by the existing role holder.

Approach to compliance

Currie & Brown operates a structured framework of policies and procedures. Within this framework the different geographies have a high degree of operational autonomy working within set delegated authorities.

It is important that the risk and compliance role is delivered in a pragmatic way, from a perspective that recognises operational challenges and one that is risk based. Working constructively with the business, the role aims to have a positive influence on both the compliance and the efficiency of the business.

It also important to state that high ethical standards are of critical importance to the success of Currie & Brown. The role holder must be prepared to highlight if they believe these standards are being compromised. The role reports to the CEO, with a secondary option to report matters to the parent company, to provide a level of independence that supports this.

Scope of the role

The role covers the following primary activities, although it would not be expected an individual has experience in all these areas. We are seeking an individual who is flexible and interested to learn new areas.

  • Custodian of the governance framework – regular review of compliance related policies and procedures, managing the business risk register and monitoring of external changes or internal events which may need policy updates. Continually improving this framework.
  • Internal audit programme – managing a programme of internal audit aimed at reviewing alignment to company procedures and standards with arising corrective actions and continual improvement opportunities. This scope includes finance, human resources, IT, information security, technical delivery (of project management and cost management fee earning commissions), health & safety, operational risks, etc. The existing audit programme is a mix of on-site multi-discipline audits and cross region desk top process audits.
  • Health and safety – custodian of the group health and safety management policy and procedures. Working with regional HSE leads as they apply those arrangements in their respective geographies. Proactively looking for areas of improvement in our health and safety performance and the training/guidance we give to employees.
  • Data protection officer – undertaking the role of data protection officer, including broader compliance of all countries with their applicable data protection and privacy laws.
  • Queries and bid input – responding to queries on compliance and health & safety matters with practical advice. Providing input to client proposals on compliance and health & safety.
  • Disaster recovery – custodian of the group disaster recovery plans. Overseeing the regional sub-plans and the emergency text communication system that is in place.
  • Internal investigations – undertaking structured internal investigations into compliance related matters that may arise.

There are a variety of secondary activities such as maintaining registers and systems for conflicts, gifts, accident reporting, whistleblowing and complaints.

From time to time there may also be other work on business improvement projects.

Interfaces

The role reports to the CEO and works closely with the group finance director, the group people director and the group IT director.

The role holder will interface across the business with all levels of employee and may also interface with external third parties.

Person profile

  • Unquestionable high ethical standards and willingness to challenge.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build trusting relationships across the business.
  • A pragmatic approach that can balance policy requirements with material risk, with a willingness to make informed practical judgements.
  • An ability to work with data and technical systems.
  • An organised and logical approach to work and problem solving.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Project and change management skills.
