The Intensive Care Unit Support Section of Biomedical Engineering is looking for an experienced individual to join a small team of technicians responsible for management and maintenance of the hospitals stock of mechanical ventilators as well as support for a range of equipment used across the Trust's three intensive care units. Knowledge of mechanical ventilation and physiology is essential. You will be required to interact with all levels of medical staff providing equipment training and advice. The role involves a significant amount of time on the intensive care units working closely with patients and medical staff, occasionally in pressurised situations The ICU support section provides clinical and technical support to the intensive care areas for all ventilators and respiratory support systems as well as supporting the use of other intensive care unit equipment. The main role involves the daily preparationand function testing of machines, and supporting medical staff in their use of the equipment. The section also carries out all maintenance and repairs on the equipment it manages requiring some technical knowledge and practical bench skills. The job will primarily involve working in the ICU support section but rotation to other sections within the department will be required based on service needs.


Collection of all ventilators and respiratory support systems for decontamination and function testing.
Removal of medical equipment at the bedside ensuring sensitivity of patient and family circumstances are taken into consideration at all times.
Provide clinical advice on appropriate ventilators and respiratory support system used.
Inform the BME manager and other BME staff of the condition and performance of the equipment within the post holder's care
in the operation and care of basic medical equipment
Enrol in appropriate continuing professional development programmes. Support the Implementation of, and help to ensure compliance with, an accredited quality system in the areas of work for which the Post holder carries responsibility

Academic/Professional qualification/Training
Science, Biomedical Engineering, electronics degree or equivalent level of knowledge and experience


training in the use and maintenance of a range of medical equipment
Registration as a Clinical Technologist with The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM)

Experience in applying workshop technology to patient-critical equipment and techniques in healthcare.
practical experience in electro medical engineering workshop practices and techniques, including preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection, repair, calibration, quality control, safety, acceptance testing and procurement.
Knowledge of medical electronics, electro-mechanical systems, computing and medical device support
Knowledge of medical device operation and management
General knowledge of electronic workshop practice and computer systems

General knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering.
Working in a department that has a quality management system in place (e.g. Knowledge of medical device integration or computer networks

Use an equipment management database to maintain asset register and record work done.
Use of fine tools for equipment adjustment/assembly.
Able to deliver teaching and training on basicequipment to other professional groups (e.g. train nurses in basic medical device use).
Able to use Excel, Word etc to set up documents and spreadsheets and extract information.
Able to lift and move heavy equipment as part of servicing.
