Staff from our Orkney office chat about what's it's like to work for HIE below. Have a read through to find out more about who you'd be working with and the types of projects we're involved in.

When did you join HIE?

I joined on 1 August 2023

What does your job involve?

I am a Development Manager supporting community organisation across Orkney, to help them deliver economic and social opportunities within their areas. I work with other public and third sector organisations to assist these community anchor organisations in achieving their goals.

What's your favourite thing about your job?

The variety within my job is my favourite thing, no two days are the same. From travelling out to visit clients in the north isles to analysis of project proposals at my desk.

What makes working at HIE special/different?

HIE looks after its staff well and the colleagues in the Orkney office have been very supportive and welcoming. New staff are supported through induction and training to help them when joining the organisation. The benefits include holidays, wellbeing and pension – which are very good.

When did you join HIE?

I joined HIE (then known as HIDB) back in 1989 and have undertaken a number of admin related posts in that time.

What does your job involve?

I mainly make sure that the Orkney area team has all the support they need and keep on top of our various system and governance requirements.

What's your favourite thing about your job?

The variety of the job keeps me interested. It’s great to see how HIE has helped grow the economy in our area and to feel that I’ve played some small part in that.

What makes working at HIE special/different?

The most special thing about HIE is the staff, not just in Orkney but across the whole Highlands and Islands region.

When did you join HIE?

I have been with HIE around nine months, having joined in August 2023 as a Development Manager within the Orkney Area Office.

What does your job involve?

My role involves working with local businesses to assist them in achieving their objectives for growth, ensuring our local businesses are successful, productive, and resilient. It is our role in the area team to recognise the unique opportunities that being based in Orkney present to our businesses, and the challenges this brings.

We provide support to our clients through advice, guidance, sign posting and investment.

What's your favourite thing about your job?

My favourite thing about my job is the diverse range of work. Working with a wide range of businesses from different sectors means no two days are ever the same.

What makes working at HIE special/different?

HIE is a very welcoming and supportive place to work. There is a strong team morale within the area office. HIE offers great opportunities for learning and development, as well as an excellent benefits package.

My HIE life - Alister Brown When did you join HIE?

I joined HIE on the 01 November 2022.

What does your job involve?

As a senior Innovation Manager, I work with some of the HIE area teams and core sector groups to promote and support delivery of the HIE 2022-25 Innovation Programme, and the various activities related to the programme throughout the HIE region.

I predominately work with businesses but the programme can also include community groups. Delivering the programme involves grant application support and assessment, for internal and external grants related to innovation. Supporting businesses through provision of innovation opportunities and key areas of consideration (including Intellectual Property) and supporting knowledge exchange events and learning journeys.

There is a wide network of support and a lot of the time my job involves getting the right business in front of the right people who can help them with moving their innovation ideas forward.

What's your favourite thing about your job?

My favourite part is meeting clients and discussing their ideas and aspirations for research and development. There is such a wealth of talent and proactivity within our business communities that HIE engages with and it's always great to speak to them, listen to their ideas and then start to shape how you can provide help and support to allow their ideas to become reality.

What makes working at HIE special/different?

I enjoy working at HIE because from day one I have been supported and made to feel part of a team. Not just my own team within Innovation and Technology, but also part of the area and sectoral teams that I engage with.

There is a welcoming and inclusive approach throughout HIE, as well as a great network of support available to help with any work issues you may have, as well as a fantastic wider support network ensuring that your general wellbeing is looked after.

Being at HIE provides great opportunities for career development across a wide spectrum of job areas. Ultimately, it's great to work for an organisation where you genuinely feel you are making a positive difference to our region.
