About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Smart Meter Test Lead to join our team at HCL's Smart Meter Test Lab in Manchester. This is a senior technical role within our operations team, where you will play a critical part in integrating, testing, and evolving smart meter technologies. If you have extensive experience in radio product validation, smart metering protocols, and AWS cloud deployment, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Senior Technical Lead in our client's smart meter test lab.
  • Collaborate with communication service providers to integrate their 3G/4G (NB-IoT) solutions with smart meters and ensure interoperability with IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee HAN.
  • Design, test, and manage the deployment of integrated lab management solutions on AWS cloud.
  • Oversee and support System Integration Testing (SIT), User Integration Testing (UIT), and defect triaging, including in-depth technical issue resolution.
  • Contribute to the evolution of the Smart Meter Lab.
  • Maintain the lab radio environment according to testing needs and ensure noise levels remain within acceptable thresholds.
  • Liaise with clients to analyse business requirements and ensure alignment with Great Britain Companion Specification & Smart Energy Code standards.
  • Establish proof of concept and drive business expansion initiatives.
  • Prepare knowledge maps and manage knowledge transitions within the team.
  • Support the customer innovation team and engage in continuous improvement programs.

Required Skills and Expertise:

  • Deep expertise in radio product validation, feature validation, system integration, and performance analysis.
  • Familiarity with smart metering standards and protocols, UK-wide smart meter industry practices, network operations, and NB-IoT implementation.
  • Proficient in 3GPP & IEEE 802.15.4 standards, mesh networking, and ZigBee protocol.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of WAN, HAN, Zigbee, mesh networks, Great Britain Smart Specifications, and Smart Energy Code.
  • Proficient with signal generators, signal analysers, spectrum analysers, and RF noise measurement.
  • Experience in managing and running test labs for smart meters and the wireless industry.
  • Hands-on experience in configuring and testing LTE/5G RAN & NB IoT products for 3GPP compliance.
  • Strong understanding of 5G NR and O-RAN technologies, including protocols such as SDAP, RRC, RLC, MAC, PHY, and Ethernet/IP.
  • In-depth knowledge of 4G/LTE architecture and protocols, especially Layer-2 and Layer-3 procedures.
  • Familiarity with 5G SA & NSA architecture, frame structures, concepts, and procedures.
  • AWS certification and experience managing resources and deploying solutions on AWS.
  • Practical experience with AWS services, architectural principles, and the AWS Management Console.
  • Skills in test management, log investigation, issue debugging, and bug reporting.
  • Proven experience in managing test teams and overseeing test labs for radio product release validation.
  • Basic knowledge of IP network infrastructure planning and management.
  • Fundamental knowledge of Python and shell scripting, with exposure to automation testing.
  • Experience with radio products and platforms from Qualcomm, Nokia, Samsung, Toshiba, EDMI, and Ericsson.
  • Proficient with tools such as QXDM, QCAT, protocol analysers, traffic generators, multi-UE simulators, Silicon Labs – Simplicity Studio, Ubiqua - Protocol Analyzer, XCAL/XCAP, Vivi TM-500, DMTS-9200/9400, Wireshark, Putty, ALM, Bugzilla, and Docker.

Work Environment:

  • This role requires onsite presence with no work-from-home options.
  • Work hours are flexible within an 8.5-hour window between 8 AM and 6 PM.
