Pest Officer - Belfast - Public Sector

Temp Contract

Main purpose of job

To be responsible to the City Protection Manager, throughthe Pest Control Manager, for carrying out the full range of pest control work,disinfecting work and drain testing in an effective and efficient manner and inaccordance with all set procedures.

Summary of responsibilities:

1. To carry out a programme of pestcontrol work including, in particular:-

- destruction of rodents, insects and otherpests and all related tasks

- disinfection and disinfestation of lands,premises, persons, clothing, furnishings, belongings and other items

- testing of sewers and drains, providingadvice on the practicalities of testing to Environmental Health Officers asrequired

2. To undertake disinfection anddisinfestation duties, including:-

- destruction of rodents, insects and otherpests and related tasks

- relief duty and searching of ships at theport

- to test sewers and drains

- control of mosquitoes and flies

- laying bait and poison as required.

3. To maintain records relating to workcarried out as required and to provide reports as required.

4. To participate as required in studenttraining programmes.

5. To liaise with maintenance staff of theNorthern Ireland Housing Executive, Housing Associations and otherorganisations as required.

6. To participate in all induction andin-service training provided by Belfast City Council and in the induction andsupport of all newly appointed staff and other human resource managementpolicies and procedures, as appropriate, including, absence management,disciplinary and grievance procedure.

7. To participate as directed in theCouncil’s recruitment and selection procedures.

8. To act in accordance with the counciland departmental policies and procedures including customer care, equalopportunities, health and safety, safeguarding and any pertinent legislation.

9. To undertake the duties in such a wayas to enhance and protect the reputation and public profile of the council.

Qualificationsand experience

Applicants must , as at the closing date

· have a full, current driving licence (Bcategory) which enables them to drive in Northern Ireland or have access to a form of transportwhich enables them to meet the requirements of the post in full [1] ;

· have a minimum of five GCSEs (grades A-C) includingEnglish, or equivalent qualifications; and

· have a relevantqualification such as BPC/RSPH (Level 2) Certificate in Pest Control orequivalent .

Applicants must also be able to demonstrate at least one year’s relevant experiencein each of the following areas:

(i) pestcontrol operations, programmes or treatments of insects that pose a risk topublic health; and

dealing directly withmembers of the public
