Consultant - Stroke

NNUHFT is a vibrant, aspirational organisation, working towards becoming a Neurosciences Centre of Excellence to respond to the National Stroke Plan. We are looking to add to our established Stroke Services team by appointing a seventh substantive, whole time (10PA) Consultant position, to support the expansion of the Stroke Directorate, including the development of mechanical Thrombectomy Services.

This appointment provides an exciting opportunity for the successful appointee to join:

  • Experienced Stroke team across acute/rehabilitation/early supported discharge

Main duties of the job

You will be based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) with a rotation to our off site Stroke Rehabilitation Unit at Beech Ward, based at Norwich Community Hospital, part of Norfolk Community Health & Care NHS Trust.

The role is for the provision of consultant medical services to patients admitted onto the Stroke pathway. This includes thrombolysis, HASU ward rounds, ASU ward rounds and rehabilitation ward rounds. Upon commencement, you will agree a personalised job plan, including clinical commitments, as well as the supervision and teaching of junior doctors involved in the care of our patients.

Contributing towards the 7 days a week stroke consultant ward rounds to all of our hyper acute stroke patients. There is an on-call rota specifically for Stroke only, with a frequency of approximately 1 in 7 with prospective cover including thrombolysis. Compensatory time off during the week is factored into this rota.

The Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH) is one of the busiest teaching trusts in England. We serve over 900,000 people across Norfolk, North Suffolk and surrounding areas for specialist services. In 2016/17 our 7,500 members of staff delivered 816,000 outpatient appointments, 90,000 day cases and 90,000 inpatient admissions from our two hospitals.
  • The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is located on the Norwich Research Park and serves the population of Norfolk and Norfolk Suffolk and further afield for specialist services. It opened in 2001 and is a 1,200 bed teaching hospital with state-of-the-art facilities. We provide a wide range of secondary and tertiary services, including Accident and Emergency. The trust commemorated 250 years of a hospital in Norwich in 2021.
  • Cromer and District Hospital is located in Cromer on the North Norfolk coast and serves the North Norfolk population. It was redeveloped in 2012 to replace the 1930s-founded hospital. We provide a wide range of consultant-led outpatient services, day case operations and a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU). The trust is commemorated 150 years of a hospital in Cromer in 2017/18.

  • Full GMC Registration
  • CCT (Proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) oCESR or oEuropean Community Rights
  • An appropriate accreditation in Stroke Medicine or equivalent speciality

Experience

  • Training and expertise in children's safeguarding
  • Applicants who are Nationals from other European country or elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5 years training period in the National Health Service required for the specialty.

Skills
Essential

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, clinical colleagues and support staff.
  • Capable of working in a multi-disciplinary team.

Desirable

  • Training/experience in a neurological subspecialty complementary to those of existing consultants
