R&D Scientist - Zonova
Location: London, Wow Workspaces Ealing
Role: Full-time with flexible working schedule (capacity for up to 22 days per working month)
Contract: Initial 6 month consultancy agreement (with potential for transition to a long-term role)
Pay: £170 day rate
About Us
Zonova is an early-stage medtech start-up company developing antimicrobial materials for medical devices to prevent infections, starting in animal health before moving into human health. As the company has just closed their pre-seed fundraising round, this is an exciting time to be joining at an early stage in the company’s life and be part of the growth journey. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about joining a new company and excited about helping combat the global antimicrobial resistance crisis from a new angle.
Role Overview
This is a full-time lab-based role in Ealing with flexible working hours and an office joined onto the laboratory space for meetings and write up. This role will require a can-do attitude due to our research being multi-disciplinary: we do not expect an expert in everything but you must be willing to give new things a try and think outside of the box
Primarily you will be working to expand our current portfolio in soft polymer antimicrobial medical devices (sutures, catheters, endotracheal tubes etc), develop and trial new technologies for orthopaedic implants (hard polymers and metals), as well as developing future plans to explore potential solutions for other hard to treat infections, such as in ear infections.
The role will be materials science/chemistry focused, but this person will have to carry out basic microbiological testing of the prototypes made (training will be given if you’re new to this). We are looking for someone with either a PhD/EngD or equivalent (i.e. a few years of industry experience) in a relevant subject (medical devices, materials, chemistry, engineering etc).
You will be joining a very early stage start-up with a small in-person team. As the sole scientist you will be working primarily with Dr Georgia Fleet (Founder & CEO) and our Strategy & Operations Lead who also work in the office/laboratory space 3 days a week.
Key Responsibilities
- Design experiments to widen existing technology claims for patent protection.
- Drive proof of concept experimental work for antimicrobial orthopaedic implants (made from both polymers and metals) with help from external partners.
- Drive new R&D for antimicrobial products for use in other areas such as ear/dental infections.
- Assist in providing data and insights for patent applications.
- Keep a reliable record of all laboratory experiments by lab book.
- Data analysis of results and comfortable presenting to the team and on occasion the board.
- Oversee the lab management and ordering of consumables/chemicals/solvents etc.
Must Be
- Passionate and knowledgeable about our mission of helping to tackle the AMR crisis from a new angle.
- A collaborative team player with an open communication style.
- Positive with an adaptable mindset that aligns with the dynamics of an early stage start-up.
- Interested and willing to learn more about the veterinary sector to develop the best products.
- Willing to learn how to perform simple microbial tests for samples made.
- Comfortable working independently as a sole scientist at this stage of the company.
- Enthusiastic about laboratory work and the real-world impacts of our technology.
- Process driven with evidenced good record keeping practices.
- Dog-friendly (they will at times be in the office).
Benefits
- Hybrid working (if you don’t need to be in the lab we won’t require you in).
- Flexible working hours/days.
- Friendly and informal working environment.
- Opportunity to grow into a senior role with an expanding team in following years.
- Being part of a unique med-tech start up pioneering novel antimicrobial products with a real world impact.
- Opportunity to network within the animal health community and travel to conferences for pitching.
- Opportunity to upskill in other areas, for example business and marketing if desired.
Next Steps
Closing date: 6th September 2024*
Round 1 - Video Application
Round 2 - In-person Interview
Role Start Date: October 2024 (TBC on availability)
*Note the role may close early if we receive a high volume of applications.
