Main purpose of job:

The Underwriting Assistant will be responsible for maintaining and ensuring the accuracy of records kept for the Casualty underwriting class, working closely with the Underwriters of the class and with the DUA team as required.

The applicant must be willing to study for their CII Professional Qualifications alongside this role, which is a requirement. This training will be in the form of an Apprenticeship, which ensures close study support, alongside working full-time as an Underwriting Assistant.

Key tasks:

  1. To accurately record underwriting risk information and maintain all such records.
  2. To develop knowledge of the Policy Administration System (PAS), Eclipse, ensuring that casualty data recorded facilitates accurate and meaningful analysis and reporting.
  3. Scanning of slip, endorsements and, where required, placing information.
  4. To record accurate information in other relevant systems, internal and external, as and when required.
  5. To provide clerical support to the underwriting teams in the office and occasionally at Lloyd's as required.
  6. Keeping up to date on technical and operational issues that impact the Syndicate.
  7. Validation of risk information and reviewing and clearing exceptions.
  8. Reporting – Provide assistance with the production of regular and ad hoc business reports.
  9. Underwriting - Liaise with brokers, colleagues and external organisations to resolve day-to-day queries.

Key personal skills required:

  1. Good written and spoken communication skills.
  2. Inquisitive nature, with the confidence to ask questions and probe to gain further insight.
  3. Ability to develop and maintain good relationships with internally and externally with clients.
  4. A high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to prioritise and keep team org.
  5. Good analytical and mathematical skills.
  6. Strong organisational skills, with ability to mete deadlines and handle multiple tasks.
  7. Ensure compliance with company and other relevant standards and regulations.

Key technical skills, knowledge and professional qualifications required:

  1. A Levels as a minimum.
  2. Desire and willingness to commit to studying towards professional insurance qualifications (Chartered Insurance Institute qualifications) via an apprenticeship training route is essential for this role.
  3. A good level of knowledge and interest in Insurance and the Lloyd’s London market is ideal but not essential.
  4. Good administrative skills, some experience in data entry and maintaining system records is advantageous.
  5. Strong IT skills and ability to learn electronic underwriting systems quickly.

Risk and Compliance Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure compliance with company and other relevant standards and regulations.
  2. Ensure compliance with relevant PRA and FCA conduct rules.
