It has world class support services including critical care, imaging, nuclear medicine and pathology.

The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery is a 210 bedded hospital which provides services to a wide range of patients with neurological disorders / conditions. The department of Therapy and Rehabilitation integrates a variety of disciplines within a multidisciplinary structure.

The post holder works as part of a multi-disciplinary team contributing to the rehabilitation of referred patients including complex and rare physical, cognitive, psychiatric and emotional adult neurological conditions.

The Rehabilitation Assistant will be responsible for assisting with specific duties that enable Therapy and Rehabilitation services to meet professional standards of care. These duties will vary depending upon the rotation where there may be a stronger allegiance to a specific AHP or nursing e.g. Albany Rehabilitation Unit and enablement duties working closely with nursing staff for set periods within the day.

Job Purpose

To provide both clinical and administrative support to the Allied Health Professional staff within areas of the service. These posts are rotational within the following care teams.

  • Neurorehabilitation Unit
  • Stroke services
  • Neuropsychiatry
  • Neuromedical
  • Neurosurgery
  • Critical care
Key Working Relationships
  • This post works closely with the multi-disciplinary team.
  • The postholder will be supervised and managed on a day-to-day level by a band 6 or 7 Therapist in the assigned clinical area and overall by the band 8b Clinical Specialist.
Main Duties and Responsibilites

Clinical

1. To work under the supervision of AHP and nursing staff in the performance of specific tasks for an individual or group of patients, as part of their goal directed treatment and rehabilitation programmes. Such tasks may include:

i. Assisting the patients with functional activities of daily living (e.g. personal care)
ii. Working directly with the therapist to deliver rehabilitation
iii. Use of rehabilitation equipment as instructed by therapist
iv. Working alone on a ward delivering treatment as specified by therapy staff
v. Assist qualified staff in the provision of adaptive equipment
vi. Assist patients with communication and swallowing difficulties to use strategies advised by the Speech and Language Therapist.
vii. To assist patients with structuring and sequencing tasks using cognitive strategies as directed by the psychologist.
viii. To provide simple nutritional advice to patients and their carers within their scope of practice under supervision of the dietitian.
ix. To work with nursing staff to ensure patients are dressed and ready for their therapy sessions.

2. To prepare patients for treatment and assist the clinician when required.

3. To prepare and maintain a safe and clean treatment area, tidying up after use, to reduce the risk of infection

4. To visit patients’ homes on Home Assessments and measure for and fit aids under the direction of the Occupational Therapist.

5. To assist qualified staff in the treatment of heavily dependent patients, this includes the use of hoists, patient handling equipment, standing frame or tilt table etc.

6. To be responsible for observing, assessing and communicating changes in patient’s condition to a multidisciplinary team.

7. To update patient clinical records in a concise, accurate and timely manner in line with UCLH and professional standards and input appropriate statistics onto spreadsheet/database.

8. To participate in the collation of information relevant to audit and data analysis.

9. To be aware at all times of the needs of the patient during illness or disability, to promote and encourage independence and restoration of function and to reinforce advice and patient education.

10. To comply with the Trust Manual handling Policy and Local Therapeutic Guidelines when moving heavy equipment and patients.

11. To deal with day to day hazards of infection and contact with body fluids, smells and noise.

12. To comply with food handling standards and wheelchair safety precautions as directed by line manager.

13. To encourage patients and carer participation in individual and group treatment sessions to help promote maintenance and improvement in independence

14. To communicate with empathy and tact when dealing with patients with cognitive impairments, complex physical disability and challenging behaviour, thus achieving a therapeutic relationship.

15. To be involved in ward based training of staff regarding nutritional screening, supplements and snacks.
