Job Purpose

A leading company in the aviation industry is looking for an “Airport Affairs Lead” to be located in Madrid, London, Barcelona, or Dublin.

This role is responsible for setting the strategic direction on regulatory and financial matters affecting the airline's operations, with particular emphasis on managing airport charges and contracts negotiations at key regulated airports. The scope includes overseeing airports performance through economic and aeronautical regulations to inform negotiation strategies, decision-making and achieve costs optimization.

Main Responsibilities

Airport Charges Negotiation and cost savings delivery:

  • Develop and implement initiatives to achieve cost savings targets for airport charges.
  • Lead negotiations with airport authorities to secure favourable terms for landing fees, passenger fees, terminal charges, parking fees, and other airport-related charges.
  • Ensure public incentives are identified and captured.
  • Support new route development opportunities.
  • Identify areas for cost optimization.
  • Engage with other relevant organizations in finding opportunities (i.e. tourism boards).
  • Support annual charges consultations, to ensure that regulatory policy is consistent and mirrored in our responses, ensuring that submissions are well-reasoned and clearly expressed.
  • Supporting the development of legal submissions to challenge regulatory decisions, challenges to airports and ANSP authorities, and working alongside industry bodies and competitors to develop appeal strategies where appropriate.

Relationship Management:

  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with airport authorities and other relevant organizations, understanding their perspectives and priorities to facilitate productive negotiations.
  • Collaborate with the airlines and cross-functional teams, including finance, operations, and legal, to ensure alignment on negotiation objectives and strategies.
  1. Contract Management and Compliance:
  • Ensure that negotiated agreements with airport authorities or other industry bodies are accurately documented, reviewed, and executed in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Support drafting contract letters and any other relevant documents.
  • Ensure fulfilment of contract obligations and contractual reconciliation
  • Accurate contract management including contract storage and recording other relevant documentation.

Reporting and Analysis:

  • Analyse historical data, industry benchmarks, and market trends to identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvements.
  • Monitor and track relevant initiatives
  • Provide regular reports and updates to management on negotiation outcomes, cost savings achievements, and future opportunities.
  • Conduct thorough analysis of airport charges data, financial trends, and performance metrics to benchmark and also inform negotiation strategies and decision-making.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years minimum of experience in aviation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in aviation, Economics, Finance, Business, Law or similar.
  • Fluent in English.

Will be valued

  • Working experience at an airport’s commercial team or airline’s user charges area is desirable.
  • Previous exposure to or knowledge of relationships with external parties.
  • Good understanding of corporate compliance & controls standards and practical experience in applying them in the own area of responsibility.
  • Working proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint, PowerBI.
