The Company My client is a leading UK-based construction and engineering firm with expertise across multiple sectors, including healthcare, education, defence, aviation, justice, highways, water, and environmental projects. Their reputation is built on the quality of their people and the inclusive culture they foster, enabling them to continuously innovate while delivering critical infrastructure and construction projects. Their inclusive culture values individual differences and creativity, making them a resilient and forward-thinking company. They encourage applicants from all backgrounds and are committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and supported. The Position: They are seeking an experienced Design Manager to manage and control the design process, ensuring the delivery of design and procurement information packages that meet project specifications. In this role, you will provide vital design input during both the pre-construction and onsite phases, working closely with the Project Delivery teams to ensure successful project execution. This is a vital position in their team, and they are looking for someone with strong design management skills, especially in construction-related projects, to ensure that all design aspects of their builds are meticulously executed and aligned with client requirements. Key Requirements
- Construction Principles Knowledge: You should have a good understanding of the principles of construction, along with experience working within project teams.
- Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for forming effective working relationships with partners, contractors, and internal teams, especially under tight project deadlines.
- IT Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required. Familiarity with CAD and other relevant design software is highly desirable but not mandatory.
- Learning Mindset: A strong willingness to learn and grow in the role is essential, with a proactive approach to continuously developing your knowledge and skills.
- Organisation: You must be highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple interfaces and maintain calm under pressure, ensuring smooth operations.
- Time Management: A structured, systematic approach to work with the ability to manage time effectively to meet deadlines and support project objectives.
- Design Development: Assisting in the development, review, and implementation of design proposals to ensure they align with customer/employer specifications. You will need to be conscious of project constraints, including time, budget, and the project’s overarching objectives.
- Digital Protocols and BIM: Supporting the implementation of TD digital protocols and any client Building Information Modelling (BIM) deliverables, ensuring that the design complies with digital workflows and meets modern data-sharing and collaboration standards.
- Design Responsibilities Matrix: Monitoring and ensuring responsibilities for the project are clearly allocated as per the design responsibilities matrix, ensuring all aspects of the design process are fully accounted for and executed.
- Team Coordination: Assisting in the effective management of the entire Design Team, including the integration of Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) components, and coordinating third-party or novated design teams when necessary. You will also need to ensure all external teams meet customer specifications, reviewing their competence and resources as needed.
- Collaborative Design Input: Facilitating forums and processes that engage the commercial and operational teams throughout the design stages, ensuring their input is considered, and fostering a collaborative design process.
- Design Quality Assurance: Conducting initial reviews and quality assurance (QA) checks on received designs, helping ensure high standards in design quality and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Document Approval: Assisting with the record approval processes, ensuring all design documentation is accurate, comprehensive, and delivered within the required timeframes.
- Programme Management: Assisting in the management and coordination of the design deliverables programme, making sure all design outputs are delivered on time and integrated with the overall project plan.
- Meeting Facilitation: Helping facilitate and manage key design-related meetings, including design review sessions, project updates, and coordination discussions to track progress and resolve any issues.
- Sustainability: Being aware of and assisting in managing sustainability deliverables for the project, ensuring that sustainability targets (both internal and external) are met or exceeded.
- Document Control: Liaising with project document control teams and supporting the management of project documentation to maintain an organised and efficient information flow.
