Oxford, United Kingdom HAYS-2 Full time

Your new company:

Do you want to help shape the future of the world’s energy? UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) are recruiting a Head of Materials Commercial Programme responsible for the maintenance and expansion of the commercial portfolio for the Materials Division. This role forms an intrinsic part of the Fusion  Materials leadership team which has the responsibility for developing a reputation as a ‘go to’ source of forward-thinking expertise, innovation, consultancy and training for materials development, irradiation, testing and modelling.

Your new role:

Your role will be 50:50 project delivery and new business role. Working with the Head of the Material Research Facility (MRF), and the Heads of Programme for Fusion Materials Interfaces (FMI) and Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), this role will ensure that utilisation of the MRF State 2 (remote and robotic) capabilities is maximised.  The role will interface heavily with UKAEA’s Business Development and Procurement-Commercial-Legal teams and must also consider the Fusion Industry Programme, the UKAEA’s Tech Transfer Hub and DESNZ’s Fusion Futures’ Industry Capabilities interfaces. Key accountabilities will include:

  • Lead the expansion of testing activity in the £50m MRF (laboratory) by creating new commercial fusion industry multiyear  contracts but also by moving beyond fusion, creating and winning new work in fission, aerospace, high end physics
  • Lead the business case development for creation of new MRF satellite/ external test facilities
  • Promote Materials Division and MRF delivery internationally
  • Lead new research grant/ research collaboration bids in excess of £1m.

What you’ll need to succeed:

To succeed in this role you must be commercially astute, seeking out new business opportunities and managing potential risks. Be cost conscious, acting with integrity, delivering on expectations and challenge what doesn’t add value. You will need a delivery focussed mindset, working cooperatively to achieve the best possible result. Demonstrating a ‘can do’ approach which delivers ‘fit for purpose’ quality in all we do. Following the process and responding positively to change and continuous improvement.

You will need to be STEM literate and credible as you will be working in the science field. Whilst we are not necessarily looking for a PhD qualification, having a BSc or a research background would be helpful.

You will need to be able to travel internationally east and west. Roughly six trips a year to locations including America, Canada, Europe, Japan and South Korea.

What you’ll get in return:

In return, UKAEA offer a wide range of employee benefits including excellent professional development and mentoring programmes, a final salary pension scheme, bonus scheme, flexible working, and relocation expenses.

UKAEA prides itself on being a great place to work and is committed to the continual development of our people. The core values are Pioneering, Excellence and Innovation and these are at the heart of the Management Development Programme which fosters development and in so doing grows our organisation to meet current and future needs.
