Maidenhead, United Kingdom AVIRE Full time

Purpose

Avire is seeking an electronics engineer to join our small, high impact R&D team working within our Area of Refuge product line. You will be designing emergency communication products that keep millions of people around the world safe, every single day. Working in a highly collaborative international environment, you will work as part of close-knit project teams formed from engineers based at our Maidenhead and Barcelona sites.

We are at the forefront of development of emergency communications systems and other safety-of-life products for the building services industry, with a particular focus on high-rise buildings. Your work will be critical to ensuring that building occupants, particularly less mobile occupants, and those with disabilities, are protected and able to communicate in the event of emergencies such as high-rise building fires.

You will play a key role in investigating new technologies and developing our next generation of products and services. We will offer you an environment that will challenge and support you in equal measure, nurturing your potential to help you achieve Chartered Engineer status and grow your career within Avire.

What will you be doing?

  • Designing and developing products across the whole lifecycle of electronics, both hardware and firmware. Approximately 20% of your development work will be hardware focused, and 80% focused on firmware and embedded software.
  • Writing firmware and embedded software in C on a variety of micros, both on bare metal and embedded Linux.
  • Developing automated test scripts and interfacing with hardware using C# and Python.
  • Investigating and recommending the use of alternative hardware platforms (e.g., ESP32), components (e.g. Jetson/Tegra), protocols (e.g. LoRaWAN) and software languages (e.g., Rust, Spark) for future applications.
  • Applying the latest research in signal processing techniques to enhance our products.
  • Ensuring that products are designed for manufacture and collaborating closely with our production teams to ensure a suitable production capability is in place, including specifying and developing production test procedures and equipment.
  • Supporting investigation of non-conformances and other quality issues.
  • Managing and coordinating engineering change and ensuring that a detailed design record is maintained.
  • Supporting the creation of a strong pipeline of ideas which solve real customer problems and pain points by advising on how advances in technology can be applied to solve real world problems etc.

What type of person are you?

  • You are pro-active and enjoy driving your designs all the way through the lifecycle to successful production and market launch.
  • You enjoy working within a highly collaborative environment but are also able to operate independently.
  • You are detail-oriented and work to thoroughly understand the complexities and challenges of your work, keeping a detailed record of the solutions you’ve experimented with and the outcomes of those experiments.

Qualifications & Experience

We think that some of the candidates we’re interested in will have the following qualifications and experience, but we recognise that everyone’s engineering story is a little different, and so we welcome applications from candidates who may have followed a non-traditional career path or taken a career break for any reason.

  • Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline (electronics engineering) or have equivalent experience.
  • Experience or knowledge of signal processing techniques in software, using both analogue and digital sources.
  • Experience developing embedded software and firmware running on small microcontrollers.
  • This role would likely be suited to a junior/graduate engineer looking to take the next step in their career, or a candidate with experience working as a researcher at PhD level.

Remote Working & Travel

This role is a hybrid role based at our brand-new office, lab and workshop space in Maidenhead. Generally, the engineering team are in the office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday but alternative working patterns may be possible, please talk to us about your needs during the initial interview.

About your team

The R&D team works collaboratively across the Maidenhead, UK and Barcelona, Spain sites, with approximately 15 engineers on each site. Each team is led by an Engineering Manager who both report into the Director of Product & Innovation who is part of Avire’s board. Smaller sub-teams are formed organically as projects emerge, and these are led by whoever is the best fit to lead the project.

Our talent philosophy is to only hire engineers who are outstanding both in terms of their technical contribution, but also in their ability to work as part of a team. We believe the best thing that a company can offer its outstanding employees is to only hire outstanding colleagues to work alongside them.

Progression within the team is through growing and demonstrating higher levels of competence, measured against a competency framework aligned to the UK-SPEC standard for Chartered Engineers, and is benchmarked against four levels, “Graduate Engineer,” “Engineer,” “Senior Engineer,” and “Principal Engineer,” with opportunities to progress into becoming a technical expert or manager beyond those levels.
