Maidenhead, United Kingdom AVIRE Full time

Purpose & Background

Avire is seeking a graduate electronics engineer to join our small, high impact R&D team. You will be designing emergency communication products that keep millions of people around the world safe, every single day. Working in a highly collaborative international environment, you will work as part of small, close-knit project teams formed from engineers based at our Maidenhead and Barcelona sites.

We are at the forefront of development of emergency communications systems and other safety-of-life products for the building services industry, with a particular focus on high-rise buildings. Your work will be critical to ensuring that building occupants, particularly less mobile occupants, and those with disabilities, are protected and able to communicate in the event of emergencies such as high-rise building fires.

You will play a key role in investigating new technologies and developing our next generation of products and services. We will offer you an environment that will challenge and support you in equal measure, nurturing your potential to help you achieve Chartered Engineer status and grow your career within Avire and our parent company, Halma Plc.

What will you be doing?

  • Designing and developing products across the whole lifecycle of electronics, both hardware and firmware. Approximately 20% of your development work will be hardware focused, and 80% focused on embedded software.
  • Writing embedded firmware in C on a variety of microcontrollers including Raspberry Pi, STM32 and PIC.
  • Exploring the use of new hardware platforms (e.g., ESP32) and software languages (e.g., Rust) for future applications.
  • Developing automated test scripts and interfacing with hardware using C# and Python.
  • Supporting the creation of a strong pipeline of ideas which solve real customer problems and pain points, providing insight into market opportunities through customer insights, market research, competitor research, etc.
  • Working with the supply chain to ensure components and any subcontract designs meet requirements.
  • Ensuring that products are designed for manufacture and collaborating closely with our production teams to ensure a suitable production capability is in place, including specifying and developing production test procedures and equipment.
  • Supporting investigation of non-conformances and other quality issues.
  • Managing and coordinating engineering change and ensuring that a detailed design record is maintained.
  • Participate in field evaluations and other market research to ensure Avire maintains its position as the market leader within our target segments.

What type of person are you?

  • You are pro-active and enjoy driving your designs all the way through the lifecycle to successful production and market launch.
  • You enjoy working closely with others and do your best work in a collaborative environment.
  • You are detail-oriented and able to track the complexities of a project from start to finish to ensure successful qualification of your designs and handover to production.
  • You enjoy passing on your knowledge and experience and are willing to mentor and coach other engineers.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Hold a minimum 2:1 degree in Electronics Engineering or another degree with substantial electronics and firmware content.

Flexible and Remote Working

Generally, the engineering team are in the office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday but alternative working patterns may be possible, please talk to us about your needs during the initial interview.
