Metro brings news, sport, entertainment, gaming analysis and much more to a fast-growing global audience and we’re looking for the next social video whizz to join our London team as Assistant Head of Social Video.


You’ll be joining a high-performing social video team at a crucial time of development as Metro’s short-form vertical video offering continues to grow. Working alongside the Head of Social Video and Deputy Head of Social Video, you’ll be responsible for helping to develop and implement short-form video strategy across multiple verticals and platforms. A comprehensive understanding of the social video environment and the ability to adapt to changes within that ecosystem is absolutely crucial. You should be able to rip up a strategy and quickly build a new one for any video, format or platform when the occasion arises. Using data and analytics to inform decisions should be second nature.


You’ll be supporting a growing team in sourcing, producing and delivering daily and weekly video content with a focus on TikTok, Facebook and YouTube. As such, this role requires deep knowledge and experience of every major social platform. Ideal candidates will have great knowledge of current affairs and entertainment, think Entertainment, Sport, Gaming, Politics and London Food/Drink Culture


You’ll be responsible for managing day-to-day output across all verticals. By having your fingers on the pulse of online conversation, you will know exactly what stories need to be covered and how. You will guide junior members of staff in presenting compelling narratives and engaging social-first content.

Role Responsibilities


  • Work with the Head and Deputy Head of Social Video to help develop long and short-term strategies for video formats across TikTok, Facebook and YouTube.
  • Help lead social video journalists across multiple verticals in creating engaging, creative and journalistically strong videos that tap into algorithms and deliver strong numbers
  • Understand legal covenants such as the UK Editors’ Code of Practice, media law, copyright law and editorial guidelines in the UK and globally
  • Oversee and upgrade workflows, including forward planning for key events
  • Aid in the development of junior team members via regular training and workshops
  • Liaise with Metro stakeholders when required
  • Work with editorial teams to ensure video output aligns with the overall strategy of the business
  • Liaise with departments across the business to ensure the social video team has everything it needs
  • Build and maintain good relationships within PR and social media platforms
  • Help to build a strong Metro.co.uk voice across our video output


Experience


  • 3+ years experience working in a newsroom or other relevant media environment
  • Proven experience developing and executing successful data-led video and social media strategies
  • Strong experience in creating engaging and social-first video content
  • Deep knowledge of how TikTok, Facebook and YouTube in particular operate
  • Technical proficiency in multimedia technology including Adobe Creative Suite - knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro is vital
  • Experience filming in a studio and on location using cameras, lighting and audio equipment
  • Experience managing a team and delegating tasks - strong communication skills are a must
  • Experience collaborating with other desks within a busy newsroom
  • Commercial experience is a bonus
