We are currently recruiting for a Head of Department to join our Subsurface Engineering Department. This role is responsible for ensuring delivery to clients on time and on budget, in accordance with the standards that Murphy Geospatial have committed to deliver. The successful candidate will liaise with all stakeholders internally and externally to review and improve processes, manage relationships, and maintain the ongoing sustainability of the department. The successful applicant will be reporting to the relevant Directors and will be based in our Birmingham or Manchester office, with the option for occasional remote / hybrid working.

The key accountabilities and associated duties include:

Project Management Tasks

  • Management of all projects allocated to the department.
  • Management of survey scope in multidisciplinary projects and coordinating with relevant parties
  • Provide schedule and progress reports to clients.
  • Stakeholder engagement – Communicating, updating, and managing client expectations from project initiation to the acceptance of works to invoicing.
  • Track and report progress on all our open projects and provide information for invoicing.
  • Track work pipeline to ensure proper allocation of resources and highlight issues for estimating strategy.
  • Problem solving solutions to ensure deadlines and budgets are maintained, escalating where necessary.
  • Implement quality procedures and protocols for the department and modify if necessary.
  • Ensure client work is delivered to the highest quality standards and any deviations are rectified with haste and learnings incorporated through after-action reviews, feeding into the Sales & Technical Manager.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients/employees to facilitate project completion and provide future opportunities that may arise.
  • Generate business with existing and new customer relationships for the subsurface engineering department.
  • Ensure accuracy of all information that is reported on the project management system.
  • Work together with other departments to deliver interdepartmental projects.
  • Ensure appropriate resources are available to allow your team to operate efficiently and safely.
  • Manage sub-contractor’s projects being the point of contact for the clients.
  • Approve all invoicing for sub-contractors and ensure that the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the department is optimised.

Employee Management responsibilities

  • Ensure an effective project management process is in place to initiate implementation of projects once contracts have been signed.
  • Provide thought leadership for the company on subsurface engineering.
  • Manage, develop, and motivate staff team including surveyors, assistants, and processors.
  • Support the Technical and Operational Managers to establish project plans that account for the most efficient use of resources.
  • Maintain regular communications with the team to ensure project plans are progressing to schedule and problems are being resolved.
  • Provide training and guidance to team in exercising their roles and responsibilities.
  • Complete staff performance reviews as required and ensure adequate feedback is given, both positive and constructive.
  • Constantly review staff levels, hire, and manage staff levels in accordance with the HR strategy Maintain a clear process for all employee leave requests ensuring project plans are updated to align with fluctuations.
  • Evaluate risks to all employee levels and skills, plan contingency and succession within the department.
  • Track, monitor and promote development of the team along the Murphy Geospatial Career path, encouraging internal progression.
  • Support human resources processes within the department around recruitment, performance management, employee relations etc.

Safety & Resources Management Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all regulations and internal policies.
  • Ultimately responsible for the quality of all data produced within the department.
  • Promote a safety culture ensure any learnings from near misses or accidents are implemented.
  • Participate on the safety committee.
  • Work closely with external clients and employees with regards various projects, reporting requirements and maintenance of required documentation.
  • Ensure all department employees have completed company induction and all necessary safety training required.
  • Ensure company safety procedures are adhered to: PPE compliance, Vehicle checklists, SPA, etc.
  • Ensure all project specific safety documentation is in place and available to the survey team.
  • Allocate vehicles and equipment to team members in line with company budgets and meet project requirements.
  • Review any near misses or accidents to ensure learnings are implemented.

Commercial

  • Responsible for achieving Departmental KPI’s each month, quarter and annually.
  • Ensuring positive cash flow is maintained for the department.
  • Track/Monitor monthly earnings and predict short term future earnings for the department · Review costs and outgoings to ensure the correct department allocation is made.
  • Strive to seek and implement continuous efficiencies in our processes.
  • Track and compare monthly target budgets and resource availability.
  • Highlight any deviation for the budget targets.
  • Create the annual budget for the SED department.
