About the role: 

This is an unpaid role until we secure funding. However, to recognize your valuable contribution, you will be eligible for a performance bonus upon successfully completing the probation period. By completing more than half of the probation period, you will have a stake in this performance bonus, ensuring that your efforts are acknowledged and rewarded.  

 

We are a startup developing our first product, the job gives you an opportunity to join the foundational team, build the product from the ground up and help the team achieve funding and product release. If you like high-risk, high reward, startup environment then this is the role for you. Post funding this position will become a salaried position, shares will be allocated, and the role will convert to a senior / managerial position within the company. 

 

Responsibilities: 

 

  • Leads the formulation, examination, and continuous improvement of our emergency response plan and framework, in partnership with senior executives, mentors, and the existing research team. 
  • Collaborates with senior leaders at V5Next to enhance our framework and bolster our application's capability to efficiently mitigate, prepare for, and respond to significant events. 
  • Works closely with the current researcher to ensure alignment in data collection, research methodologies, and analysis, driving innovative research outcomes. 
  • Stays adept with modern technologies and methodologies, integrating them into the research and data processes to enhance our crisis management strategies. 
  • Conducts fieldwork as needed to gather data from real-world scenarios, providing insights into vulnerabilities, response times, and emergency preparedness. 
  • Serves as one of the primary advisors at V5Next for crises, disasters, and emergency response, with a focus on data-backed decision-making. 
  • Ensures compliance with mandatory requirements in each region where we intend to establish our operations, including up-to-date knowledge of regulatory changes. 
  • Conducts risk analyses and assessments for specific crises, identifying vulnerabilities and potential points of failure. Formulates strategies for risk avoidance and mitigation. 
  • Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with government officials, health authorities, hospitals, and NGOs to ensure a synchronized response to any emergency or significant event. 
  • Develops and, if necessary, initiates emergency response training, simulated emergency exercises, mental health, trauma training, and related activities. 
  • Manages emergency situations, delivering timely, relevant, and accurate information to the public, utilizing modern communication technologies. 
  • Collaborates with Corporate Communications to promptly disseminate accurate information to the news media and the public. 
  • Represents the department as needed in Council and Committee meetings of the City and with other stakeholder organizations. 
  • Stays informed about activities or changes that could impact the likelihood of an emergency, as well as those that could affect response efforts and the implementation details of the plan. 
  • Prepares status reports on emergency situations describing response and recovery efforts, needs, and preliminary damage assessments. 
  • Willing to work in a fast-paced startup environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities and crises. 

 

 

Basic Qualifications 

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Emergency/Disaster Management or an equivalent combination of recent experience. 
  • Over 4 years of experience coordinating large-scale events or managing an organization’s response to complex emergencies. 
  • Experience in the practices and procedures involved in researching, developing, implementing, and maintaining emergency or related response plans. 
  • Experience working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams. 
  • Extensive knowledge of theories, principles, and best practices in emergency management, business continuity, and/or crisis management. 
  • Profound knowledge of risk identification and impact assessment methods, techniques, and practices. 
  • Experience in developing and facilitating training and programming, and preparing accompanying resources for volunteers, support groups, victims, and responders. 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, train, coach, and motivate volunteers. 
  • Demonstrated experience with event planning, risk assessment, and financial management. 
  • Ability to organize work, establish priorities, and meet deadlines while navigating unpredictable emergent needs. High flexibility and adaptability are required. 
  • Strong consultation, issue management, negotiation, facilitation, and collaboration skills; networking and relationship-building skills to bring together internal and external stakeholders, develop effective partnerships, and achieve consensus. 
  • Ability to exercise tact and sound judgment in dealing with others and handling challenging issues. 
  • Ability to solve problems in accordance with established procedures while under pressure. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and achieve established goals. 
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office 365 tools (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint). 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Bilingualism is an added advantage. 
  • Availability to work between 10-15 hours per week. 
  • Satisfactory Police Record Check
